3 plug has a white plugged coilpack which is different to the single plug version iirc but is also the same as all of the jp4 coilpacks

does an early type work on a later car just not properly, or does it not work at all?

I've not tried it but do know of someone who said it works.
He had to file off a notch from the clip on the coil pack so that the other MK loom plug would fit - he then swapped the outside wires round and said it worked fine.
I've not tried this myself so can't say for 100% but I couldn't see why he'd make it up :S

According to Ryan (RyanMT) the later coilpacks can be used on single plug looms, but not the other way round as the grey/white plug coilpacks use an extra wire which relays additional info to the 3 pluggers concerning spark timing (something to do with individual sparking rather than two signals, one for 1 and 4, one for 2 and 3).
Single pluggers dont use this so the wire swapping is probably just moving the wiring to the layout of the black clip coilpacks, and discarding the extra, useless cable.
