fuel pump HELP!!!!!!!!!

how can you test if a fuel pump/sender is working it primes ok when starting up then some times it don't... and another thing is that the fuel needle on clocks sits on empty with light on and when i put £10/15 in.it will move up but a couple of miles down the road it will go back to sit on empty again with light on
