If i hand in my notice, which is a month, and don't work my notice whats the worst that can happen? IE Go in, give notice, leave.
Id expect not to get paid obviously but can they do anything else? Don't want to 'burn' my bridges buy not working my notice.

i was thinking of doin this but reading my contract it said max of a month notice so i gave a week lol theye were pissed off but nothin they could do. so 1st check your contract and other option is put a month notice in and then go on the sick go to your docs say you need 4 weeks off and if your starting a new job get them to pay you cash or by cheque for 1st month.

You can book holiday and then hand in your notice for part of that, not the other way around tho.
Also is noty a good idea to give a bad reference as you can be sued ;) all you can really do is refuse to give a reference which in many ways is as bad

i did this on a previous job posted my notice saying due to 5days holiday ow'ed, please use them to cover my notice ! didnt go down well but the week i left they also got investigated by tax office aswell due to not paying minimum wage. as they were a piss take company and were forever fuking me about with wages so i took revenge. funny enough though the director said i dont blame him and hes done the best thing ever getting out the company as its going down the pan (he was only working his year notice as they were fukin him over to ) now the company has pretty much gone !

Nothing will 'happen'.But same token it isn't really giving notice is it now.....your company has said they want one month notice in your contract, any less won't be taken as notice...they have explained there definition of 'notice' to you.
To the other saying about references: a bad reference cannot be given,so i dont see how it will effect hes chances or anyone else in his situation tbh.

Why can you not be given a bad reference??
When i guy left my company to work else where the new employer contacted me and asked me if the guy was a good worker and why he left. I answered very honestly.....i doubt he got the job

You are allowed to give a bad reference but no-one does any more because the other person has the right to sue. It's a joke I know. My dad does the recruitment for his company and he said references are a waste of time now because they all say the same thing, e.g. "Bob worked for us between 1985 and 2005", with no opinions on the person. Because if they put "Bob was out sick often and didn't work hard", then Bob has the right to sue their ass.

just looked up and seems you 'can' give a bad reference but as i understood it it is taboo like pspdan said.
giving no reference is almost as bad as a bad one but doesnt carry the risk of being sued.

why is it illegal to give a bad reference, surely they want the truth - not a bunch of lies about a person??

You tell new employer you think they were useless, unreliable and generally shit.
Person who the reference is about believes this to be untrue, you then get taken to court for slander and as the main evidence is a written reference signed by you, you pretty much fucked lol
Makes sense?
Roj
16th November 2009, 21:39
surely iff what you say in the reference is true then they dont have a leg to stand on.
Like in James' case he could have said. i employed him for 10 weeks and saw him on 5 occasions.
its the truth so how can he be sued about it?
i may be wrong but sounds ridiculous.

I can imagine though that some bosses are harsh, i would only give a bad reference if i had a valid reason..........not just to be an ass

16th November 2009, 21:43
my contract said I had to give 1 week notice, so I did. Then my bosses turn round to me and say if I don't work 2 weeks they wont pay me. So I got on the phone to human resources and I ended up getting payed twice as much cause my bosses were pricks.
Not really related to thread but I thought i would post anyway lol

Yea, wasn't sure. Its just most jobs that look appealing, just as another step up the ladder, seem to be instant start. But don't think I could afford the bad reference tbh.

If your that well suited to the job Ste they will wait 4 weeks for you to start -otherwise they ain't looking for a quality candidate.
I'd have real serious doubts about a new employer if they gave me shit about working my notice... To the point where I'd tell them to gtf!
Don't burn your bridges mate, leave on a high & be polite about it.
If possible say that you need to stretch out & get more experience or a new start to keep your former employer sweet :y:
You never know if you might need to come back & your last impression can be a lasting one

Serious dude, for your own good... Do not give a bad reference in future.
If a prick whos late, works like shit etc, just tell the other 'employer' the time and date that they worked from and til. In slang terms they will pick up on it and realise the fuckers nothing special.
You can get sued a sheeeeeet load for giving a bad refereance, as bullsheeeeet as it is. No one agrees with it but thats the way the country works unfortunately.
A few years ago someone could phone up and you could bitch like no other on the phone to them, these days you need to bite your lip and accept the law.

we employed someone recently, who turned out the be absolutely god awful. apparantly we got a bad reference from his last employers which described him to a T. We've been struggling as after their first week they aren't on as extra staff anymore, so we ended up short staffed when he inevitably didn't turn in!
who wants to employ someone who's shit? i would rather know in advance how they're going to be.

so even after there previous employe gave him a bad reference, you still decided to employ him????
well it doesnt matter what sort of reference he got if your going to ignore it.
a bad reference is equivalant to no reference.
if your an employer and someone leaves for another job and asks for references, your best bet is to refuse.
going abit of track here but may be worth knwoing to some people that you can also be sued by if your an employer and you give a good reference, and the new employer doesnt see this.
the new employer can sue you for giving false references aswel, positive or negative.

or maybe the guy was bad at his job? lol
as an employer, you'd rather know if someone was good or not at a job, it costs a lot recruiting and training people you know
as above, refusing a refferance basically says "the guys crap" without putting your foot in it, so to speak

nah, he got employed straight away before we got the reference as we needed staff and i assume he did well in the interview. then we got the problems and the reference!

ah that is bad luck tbh.
i think the truth should be told what ever the matter.maybe if it bad then go in as much detail as possible about it so the new employer can make a fair judgement out of it and get the prospected emplyee views.
its a shame that we live in such a blame culture the way we do.
