Hi, I recently went into halfords (stupid idea) desperate to get some new speakers, i'd read up on ICE ages ago but had forgotten it all and was too impatient to bother looking up any more or coming back on here to ask some q's and order from an online stockist. Problem is, the speakers i bought are pretty shite:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_23 7965_langId_-1_categoryId_165707

Theyre already fitted so i guess I cant take them back (can I?). They cant really handle bass, especially at higher volumes but they are fairly crisp. Am I stuck with these? Was planning on fitting a sub in the future aswell would this help the speakers out by taking some of the strain of the bass away from them or is it pointless? Im annoyed because a good sound system is really important to me, especially since I have a 1.1 and theres no point in doing any other mods before I can get a better car.

Damn me for being impatient, what do you suggest I do?

try and take them back, see what they say.

theyre not made to handle bass, no front speakers are

but i see your point, and alpine arent the best in the speaker department :n:

Theyre already fitted though, does that matter?

Also will getting a sub help take some of the strain off the speakers and create a crisper less distorted sound?

I made the same mistake as you mate but then got an Edge Active sub as well under a budget and I love it now! I was so dissapointed like you at first but the sub soon sorted that out!

the two biggest mistakes people make in audio are:

buying a sub, then complaining they have no mid / high fill, so decide to either buy 6x9s or put cheap speakers up front.

or in your case;

buy cheap speakers and then think a sub is the answer...

BOTH are the wrong ways to go around a good audio set up. to achieve a good sound the best way is to buy some decent speakers up front, and if budget allows, then amp them.

speakers arent made to produce bass, so even if your running £500 speakers up front, they'll still not make bass notes! another very common problem people have with their speakers, they set it on the headunit to +4bass etc etc thinking that will make the speakers produce bass. when it just makes them sound horrible.

to build a good system, you should always start from the front backwards. ie:
headunit
comps up front
sub

if you put a sub in your car now, do you think it'll make your front speakers better? or do you think the bass notes from the sub will just cover up the awful sound comming from the speakers?

another thing, think outside of the box with speakers and maybe consider mounting a-post tweeters, do you think your feet can pick the music up better than where your ears are? i think not. Saxo door cards are so thin they dont really have the capability to carry 'deep' sound if you get me.

No I was hoping the sub would allow me to turn down the bass on the speakers so that they sound better whilst the sub provides bass. Is my logic right or will it just sound terrible? (keep in mind im not an ICE perfectionist) Dont worry I did get a decent head unit a while ago before doing anything else.

I havent got a massive budget I cant see the point in spending loads on a sick soundsystem just to have to sell the car after summer when i go to uni. Also I dont really have the time to soundproof the whole thing so its just going to rattle whatever I do.

The black air range is pretty decent, one of there amps is really good, but that's about it generally.

as long as you can prove you have bought it with a recipt or bank statement you have consumer right to expect a high standard and good quality product. so if you are not happy with the product you are entirely in your rights. return it and know your legal rights is the key:)
