mine kinda did something similar, id drop it to second go round like a 90 degree turn go to accelerate and it just wudnt rev above 2000rpm, foot welded to the floor, but then it wud suddenly kick in and be fine. had it checked and they cudnt find anything wrong. but mine hasnt done that in ages!

When you're low-ish on fuel, bang a whole bottle of Redex in the tank and take it for a spin. That should clean most of the shite out in the injectors.

Take it to a garage for a check mate.

garages charge too much, only reason my car goes to garage is for MOT :) i do all work myself
only thing i can think of is injector blocked

Try getting new injectors if that doesnt work then you will have to take it to a garage.

sounds like a blockage form the exhaust sytem using more fuel and limited power = cat. i think im having the same problem with the mondeo all points to the cat POSSIBLY so get a mechanice to check it just incase

It does not matter what gear your in - the engine does not know this so it should not be a factor-possibly a coinsidence.
the point raised above re the cat collapsed is a good one but I would have thought it would cause you to have the problem all the time rather than just now and then. With all this water about it possible that you may have a cracked fuel filler pipe and your fuel has water in it maybe?
Best put some fresh fuel in, change fuel filter, put some redex or similar through it and see what happens. Will be worth chcking exhaust as well. Stand behind car and get a mate to rev it, you should feel exhaust gases exiting the system very quickly with no "chuffing" noises.
Failing that wait until it's dark and look for
Hope you get it sorted and maybe some of the above is helpful to you
