Had bought one of these a couple years ago as like you i hated taking polish off by hand. You get them coming up in places liek lidl and aldi every now and again pretty cheap. Im sure mines wasnt much more than a tenner mate.

If it's just for polishing you only need to look for something that does around 2000rpm, argos/halfords/cleanyourcar.com etc

what other things can you do with em except polish? are they worth spending £40 on?

You can do loads with one, search detailing world forum and have a gander.. scratch/swirl removal for example. But the more you spend on one the better it's going to be

There are 2 types of polishing machine,
Rotary: Very quick paintwork correction but also very easy to damage the cars paintwork (burns etc etc) imo these are not a machine to use if you are a beginner.
Orbital: Give a very good finish, slower than a rotary, but they are very easy to use and you cant really do any damage. Also very good on plastics as they dont generate lots of heat.

think i might invest in a rotary then, do you have to use propper polish for machines?

If you get a rotarty go and test it on a scrap panel mate, not the best thing to just rush into a rotary at all

Couldnt agree more :y:
Its so easy to damage paint with rotary!!! Also the heat they generate can warp plastic panels which isnt good as a saxo has lots of them :y:

I started off with a orbital mate, there more expensive but its better in the long run, i now have both
fact is you wont go through paint with orbital but working the polish panel warming up is harder to achieve, rotary does it instant
go through the paint then you will wish you had gone orbital, maybe expensive but will be more expensive for a respray
Have a look on detailing world theres always people selling them

A £30 orbital sander is a little bit of wasted cash imo, as mentioned in that thread, it's no real use to polish its a buffer at best
