How can you tell if your axles gone?

my car seems to be sitting a small amount lower but im not sure if im just getting paranoid :S

your wheels should start to slowly cave in at the top so it looks like you have camber (shouldn't have on a torsion bar)

at least that's what my garage told me, if i were you just get new bearings

Will have a slight amount of camber but only a little.

jack the wheel up and see if there is play at all by rocking it backwards and forwards.

exactly what Aron said mate on my old beam both bearings fucked but one wheel had camber but the other was straight. Also it starts crabing aswell and very bad when driving

Check the wear on the tyres, if its uneven wear then that can indicate a worn beam.

Good chance is if you've only just noticed it, if you were to replace the bearings in the trailing arms then it will be like new again. Its only when you start getting bad camber/play in the arm that it has completely 'gone'. The only real way of seeing it is OK or not is the take off the trailing arms and inspect the stub axle. Will probably have marks on it but unless its pitted/has grooves it is still perfectly usable.

Best to check it out ASAP, for the sake of a new bearing kit - £60 or a recon/new beam - £300+ it saves a lot of hassle in the future.

so when an axle "goes" it basically means the bearings are going? ive had a weird feeling in the car when i swerve from left to right ever since i lowered it, it feels like the back wheels are locked on ice, and i was told to wobble the wheels with the car jacked up but it all felt fine.
so jack it up and wobble the wheels around and see if theres any movement?

Yep, jack it up on and get it on axle stands (placed where you normally jack it up on the sills). Then make sure its stable... To find if your bearings are going - one hand on the top of the wheel, the other benhind it on the bottom of the wheel.

Push your hand away from you and pull the one on the underneath to you. If you can feel it wobble a bit get the bearings replaced. Its easy enough :y:

yes as above or just stand looking at the back of your car and if the axle is going you will have camber on the wheels (ie the top of the wheel will sit further in the arch than the bottom)

if you find it is gone it is sometimes easier and cheaper to just get another vtr axle and swap them over, just make sure if you buy another axle the bearings are ok.

who lowered your car? what method did they use to lower it?

tweeqd off here, the guys with the turbo'd, nitroused AX.

they did it properly. tortion bars out and adjust each side and torsion bars back in. not the click method!

Thats exactly what i thought. Ive pm'd him to ask if he's dealt with them before. as they are very cheap

EDIT - Had a reply from db-sax and they seem to be a good company. Ill definately be dealing with them soon.

camber is best detection or jack up the car and take off the handbrake, grab top and bottom of wheel and pull/push top to bottom, if there is freed movement then axle is goosed....

no banging or anything. i think im just getting paranoid.

its just when i take pics of my car the front doesnt look right, looks as if its too high, worked out it cant be too high so the back must be lower, thought this was to do with the axle :S dont think it is. but im now getting paranoid about the slight camber on my wheels just incase the bearings are shot!

i fitted vtr alloys to my saxo 1.1 02 plate and eventually we car has started leaning to one side on the passenger side and looks to be the front and back and the rear wheel wud rub on the wheel arch wen i wud corner so i took it 2 the pug specialist in nuneaton and they said everything was fine and after a while all saxo's tend to lean to one side even on a level surface and they sugested i just put sum harder shocks on the rear to prevent it rubbing on the arch, since then i have changed the standerd shocks and have put sum heavy duty gas shocks on the has stopped the rubbing but ca still seems a bit dipped at the rear and also looks low on the front based on wen i have a m8 in the front it looks lowe on tht side but have bumped tested it both sides and seem the same and doesn't appear to be the front shock or spring can any1 help asap

Your talking about a different stubb pin -as Sam said theres no such thing as a group n stubb pin (the pin that the bearings go on / are pressed into the yellow beam)

Also - if the pins are marked in ANY way then they should be changed / replaced - this requires a new beam or very large press to press in new pins (which citroen dont sell on there own, they will sell you a new beam at 450quid + bearings)

Lukee - The Nuneaton "specialist" clearly doesnt have a clue what he is on about, it isnt 'fine' its actualy 'fu*ked' because the stubb pin which the bearings sit on has worn away quite badly. We (me & piggy123) arent far away from you (Near Market Bosworth) and we refurb the beams. Drop Sam (Piggy123) a PM mate.

hey guys, ive recently bought a new beam from imaxle, would of gone to sam on here but it was a gift from a family member.
The service was very good and the beam is very well made. as these guys are relitavley new to us i thought i post up saying i was very pleased with the product and service.

By no means am i comparing sam&jp to imaxle. They both offer good service, its just that jp and sam have been on this site alot longer so people trust them more. Id happily reccomend either of these people for a new beam.

Yeh am not talking about that one, im talking about the ones that you can get GrpNs of the stubb pins, NOT the axel pins.

And the beam that citroen sell for £450 is what IMaxels sell for £150. All refurbs have new pins all around and bearings.

Just to clear things up, We (Imaxle) put new stub axles, the inner ones that press into the tube in all of our axles we sell. I think what danny is trying to say is, we sell the outer ones also, that the wheel bearing go's on. They are alot better quality than standard ones, so thats why he is referring to them as grpN, but they will be the same or stronger than the ones advertised as grpN elsewhere. Hope this clears up any confusion.

jpsaxo
9th December 2009, 13:24
Are the outer ones known to be a weak point then? Ive never come across any that have been bent etc so far in all the beams we've done.

So i wouldnt imagine that part would need upgrading?

I've given my saxo some serious stick since it was built and never had any issues on tarmac surfaces & i dont know anyone else thats had any problems. Unless your rallying then maybe it could be required i guess...

IM_axles
9th December 2009, 13:36
we have had some from cars that have hit kerbs etc that have been bent, we are aiming at the fast road/ track and rallying market with the stronger ones, and also, its still a hugely cheaper option that buying the whole arm with a new stub pin fitted from pug/citroen.
