DVD Head units - Legal to play with passengers in car?

Just wondered are DVD players in head units illegal to have on when you have other passengers in the car? Might sound a stupid question but have heard different answers from different people. Anyone know the rules on it?

your only suppose to be able to watch videos whilst parked up with the handbrake on

nope, only if they have a tilt screen so only the passenger see them whilst driving. although you can get split view tv/sat nav which means the driver sees a satnav from their seat the passenger can watch tv, saw it on the gadget show a few months back
