Job advice please

Could anyone give me advice on getting a job, I finally realised I want to work on cars, but I didn't know this before starting college which I did 2 years engineering, which involved, lathe work/welding/hand fitting, etc.

Now would my best bet be to just find every garage near to where I live and hand in a CV and hope I get a phone call, I only know little about cars, but do you think there's a chance I could get offered a job? Even though I would just be able to help out, as I have alot to learn.

You could try, but in the current climate i think you would be lucky to hear back?

What about apprenteship route? Sure the money is pishhh, but it's better than nothing and it's all done in the workplace, maybe one day day release at college.

19 this month, i wouldn't mind an apprenteship te be honest :y: anything that pays you know :P

tbh mate you would be very lucky to get a job.

i done a 3 years course at college learning how to spray cars.

got a city n guilds level 1 + 2.
most sprayers i know have only got level 1 btw.

still never got me a job doing it so after xmas im renting a unit and starting myself.

i wouldnt go into a garage and ask for a job .... ask for an apprenteship and if your good enough 9 times out of 10 they will take you on anyway

Hi I think it will also be helpful to learn more about your craft. Try to self study about cars if that really is your passion. Nothing is impossible as long as your determined.

Yeah mate aslong as you have grit and determination and the will to succeed your find something, you just have to show that character to your potential employers, if they can pick up on your passion to learn then there'l take you on.

The course you have done is sort of relevant. You could help out in a garage for free for a while? Gives you some experience and then you can write on your CV aswell.

But it would be a lot easier if you try and get onto a mechanic course.

Apply to the main manufacturers. They normally have apprentiship programs, but do take a while to reply. Also speak to local garages asking if they would take you on as an apprentice. Say you can do welding as this will be needed for certain tasks.

They might say they cant pay you much but thats the way of an apprentice. Stick at it, watch and learn and you will hopefully be employed as a mechanic when they have taught you enough.

Best bet otherwise is to do a course and have one or two days a week at a garage.

My brother was in the same boat as you, did some engineering course at college but didnt like it, he went down to our local mechanics garage and started to help out for free one day a week, he then started paying him abit, and now hes getting an apprenticeship.

But trust me dont just go to college to do mechanics, level 1 is sssooooo slow unless you really need to learn the basics? You learn so much more on the job.
