So, i'll keep the story as short as I can..
Sister has been driving for 10 years, she's 27 now. Last night she went for a meal in a pub with 3 of her friends. All in my sisters car. They pull out to go home and down the road get pulled over. Traffic police say she doesn't have a licence. Sister obviously says there must be a mistake because i've been driving 10 years and have had 3 points in the past when I first started driving so I must have a licence.
Traffic coppers say she hasn't and impound the car there and then and make her and her 3 friends walk home in the dark. £150 and £30 a day in the Police Compound. Sister is devostated, can't get to work.
Ring the DVLA today to try get some answers and nothing can be done according to them. Apparently they are saying she never sent off the paper part when she passed her test so if that is right she has been driving around with no licence for 10 years? Something can't be right..
So now it's looking like she has to apply for a provisional, re-take her theroy, re-take some lessons and then re-take her driving test.
Absolute fucking joke, someone has fucked up somewhere.

She probably forgot to renew her licence and you only got half the story. I say this as if she passed 27 years ago it will have expired resonantly and this is why she had points in the past with no problem.

Doesnt she have a photo license or paper part to prove she has it?

Surely she must have had a licence to get points, doesn't she have a licence number - surely dvla have a record of it?
Definately a dvla cock up - just keep on at them make complaints if you have to, someone with any brains will eventually look at it

Did she not have a licence on her at the time?
And if the DVLA say she didnt send off the paper part of it, surely they would have sent her reminders??

DVLA have been cocks lately. Heard of this happening a lot, like when you send your licence in for renewal - it comes back with certain catgories missing.

If she's got the paper counterpart and card license. Then photocopy them and then send them to dvla with a covring letter of some sort explaining the situation. That should sort them out.

3rd December 2009, 22:49
Does she have the pink photocard license or had they not been issued then?
If she still has a green photocard license then she's never applied for her full license in which case, the PO PO and DVLA are correct. :(

i am 27 and have been driving around 10 years and my licence expires in january 2010 and needs renewing.
someone mentioned it earlier, but i bet she hasn't renewed it.

Actually, mate, you really need to contact watchdog about this.
I have got a friend who has recently had the exact same thing happen to him! Contact watchdog you could be the final nail in the coffin before they do something about it.
Sorry to hear about your sister though, it's gutting when your not allowed to drive a car!

If she never got the pink full license card then she never really had a license ;) Or as Kendal says, it's expired! Mine expires in 2 years :o

Similar thing happened with me on my first car, took my car off me as I wasen't insured apparently...
I assured the officer I was insured as a named driver on my Grandads policy...
Nope, stuck without a car in the middle of nowhere.
Took my documents in.. oh this appears to be in order. Thanks cocksucker!

this was actually on watchdog recently. a few people had very similar stories.
dont give in until its sorted. contact watchdog for advice.

what the hell? thats well weird. surely if she had no license it would be on the DVLA database and PNC in police cars and she would have been pulled many a times! and where the hell did those points go?
pjw
3rd December 2009, 23:51
So she didnt think it was wierd she didnt have a physical paper/plastic licence for ten years?
How did she get the points added on the paper part?
Its not really anything to do with the Police and DVLA, theyre actuallly doing their jobs by the sound of it. Its your sister who is the one who has never bothered her arse to make sure everythings kosher.
On top of that she wouldnt have been insured for the last ten years.

this is happeneing a lot lately and DVLA wont admit its their fault when it clearly is this was covered on watchdog a while back even a police officer was caught out and had to re take his test i would get your sister to take legal advice on it and advise anyone sending licence to DVLA to take copies of what they send
Also cant blame the policeman he is doing his job and records show she doesnt have one

i had to renew my licence last month. i took photocopies of it as when a mate renewed his in the summer the dvla cocked it up and put the wrong date of him passing his test. it worked out he passed when he was 16...

How can she be insured with no licence for a start? And you havn't answered everyones question, does she or does she not have a counter part licence and a pink card?
Her own fault really if she doesn't have one, or the test certificate she received saying 2"CONGRATULATIONS ON PASSING YOUR DRIVING PRACTICAL TEST, HERE'S A LOLIPOP!"
Roj
4th December 2009, 14:42

4th December 2009, 23:39
There has been news of this before... people sending there licence off to get points removed, and then getting theres back saying they no longer hold a bike license... It was on watchdog a few months back.. Some traffic cop, was in his 40's, sent his license off for renewal, all of a sudden no bike license, and thats what he did his patrols on!
DVLA are cocks, i think when they recieve stuff, they just knock it on like every other, without even checking.

You're an arse tbh. You'd be exactly the same if it had happened to you. And she had 3 points, so im pretty sure she will have her counterpart as you need it to get the 3 points.
Also it's not like she was deliberately driving around without a licence (if that is the case). As said, she's paid insurance, tax and as far as she knew she had a licence for the last ten years.

I wonder how sympathetic you'd be if she hit you and you later found out she was uninsured? For a change, the police are doing what they should be doing and getting uninsured drivers off the road.
I guarantee you she didn't send off the test certificate. My brother lost his bike license the same way. OPs sister has no one to blame but herself. Simples.

Well said imo!!!!!!!!!
Imo there are far worse people on this forum....who modify there car and dont declare the changes making your insurance invalid :n:
This person is not to blame imo i personally had no idea that a photo license expires.....why do we not get a reminder like for road tax??

That's a fair point. They have no problems doing it for tax so they should have no problems doing it for licence's. Hopefully they will realise this and sort it out.

I'm surprised someone at the DVLA even picked up the phone.
When you ring up, there's about 25 automated options to go through and then a voice usually just says redial another number. It really is a fucking joke.
They employ monkeys that's the problem - hope she gets it sorted.

And you wouldn't be talking like you are if an uninsured driver wrote off your car, would you! Having a pass certificate means shit if you aint sent it off in the two years (or whatever it is) you get to do so.
If the DVLA have cocked up I'm sure she'll be able to get it sorted. The lack of replies by the OP suggests otherwise. In which case I'm glad the fucker's off the road, cos uninsured drivers piss me off. Simples.

I would be slightly annoyed, yes, but with the given situation i'd be more frustrated with the DVLA. As said, she paid insurance, she paid tax. She is not a criminal. She has just been unlucky.

if she never sent her license off then she will have to do the lot again. i think its upto 6 months after that they have to recieve your provisional with the pass certificate to then get your pink license sent out to you.
if she has failed to do this then its unlucky, start again from scratch
