Am I the only person who gets told this becuase I own a French car?

"That car's shit because it's French"
"It'll fall apart"
"My dad won't let me buy a ClioSport because he says French cars are shit!"

Yet in the 2.5 years of owning my VTS it's only needed a new altenator pulley and has consistently come up trumps against my friends German and Jap cars?

Stock DC5 was down 17Bhp on the same RR my VTS was 5Bhp up (with breathing mods). Mates Vento with a de-cat, Piper cam and IK was 3Bhp down on power and another mates S13 didn't even make it to the rolling road because it broke down as did a Golf VR6 hah!

Yet they still label French cars are shit! Haha.

Any one else have friends as narrow minded as me? :panic:

Agree with Elliot and J222222JRA.

And I have mates that think exactly the same. Why does your dad have an influencing factor on your car choice, surely it's your money and your insurance (or was that just an example? :) )?

aren't you old enough to make your own mind up when buying a car ?;)

There's an exception to every rule but BROADLY speaking French cars ARE less reliable than their Japanese or German counterparts. Why do you think you can pick up a Cliosport for £2000 or a 206Gti for £1500? They're cheap for a reason because Renaults in particular DO FALL APART! Oh and the dealerships are wank.

I had a Honda Civic Vti (Jordan) for three years, never paid for anything other than servicing costs and MOTs. Same goes for the Golf I have now. 18months ownership, again only an MOT and a service. The Polo I've had 6 months and only had an alternator replaced - even that was under warranty.

I've had a Cliosport and it was a piece of shit to be honest, went wrong every other week. Had a VTS which wasn't too bad but not exactly reliable. My brother-in law has had all sorts go wrong with his Saxo too.

People like to jump on the band wagon. You'll find non-French car owners call French cars shit. You'll find non-Jap car owners call Jap (crap) cars shit. It goes on and on and it's boooring. I've had French cars since passing my test so... for 12 years. Mates of mine have had Jap/German cars during that time and my cars have never had the kind of problems they have had, so it makes me laugh if them or anybody else labels "French cars are shit".

At the end of the day, they're jealous :)

Edit:- And remember, Citroen have won a "few" championships on the Rally stages with Sebastian Loeb AND French cars are easy to fix/maintain if something goes wrong unlike the majority of other car manufacturers. Oh and the smaller hothatch French cars (205's, 106's, Saxo's) are very light and many are used for track days) so they can't be "that" bad... can they ;)

Like with any car, if you abuse it then its bound to go wrong. If you take good care of it then chances are that it wont.

Most people who say they are sh*te are just repeating what there friends have said to them, most people havnt even owned one and havnt got any evidence to back up there claim.

"French cars are shit"
"It'll fall apart cos its French"

If people say this, they clearly know not very much about cars. Its a far too generalized statement, there'll be good and bad examples of all manufacturers.

My sax is 10 years old, I've owned it for 5, its a sound car. The build quality isnt top notch, but its a cheap car so put up with it.

"French cars are shit" - Citroen have made and are still making a decent amount of top quality cars. Fucking makes me laugh how dumb people can be.

dc5 would be down, not running the same fuel as japan and the climate will take an affect on it :afro:
also depends on last service ;)

French cars imo are shit, but saxo is still cheap and fun.
But go drive a vw or a vaux and it feels put together, get back in the saxo it feels like poo.

Main reason i liked my saxo was because its cheap and shit! Just got sick of constantly fucking about with it and thinking wtf is that noise now!

not a clue who tom is, honestly not bothered either.

going from experience of friends, including some of the yorkshire region i know.

alot of people have had french hot hatches, mainly vts saxos and not one of them has them now, or has any plans to get one either.

Tom is a guy off here who had several saxo's, then upgraded to a Mk4 VW Golf but didnt like it so is now selling it for a saxo again lol

Its not just french cars that are crap, if you treat any car like crap it will give you problems imo

Just my opinion.

Just my opinion.

agreed on the treating cars like crap comment. 90% of cars that break down etc have not been serviced properly or looked after.

i have a derv golf thats very fast, nearly 140k on it. full service history from new well looked after.

in its life its only ever had new tyres, a crank sensor, one broken spring and been serviced. thats it. and nothing has ever gone wrong with it.

Lol, lol, lol, lol. Just to clarify, my dad didn't say I couldn't buy a French car (he couldn't care what I drive tbh) it was a mates dad who said it when he wanted a 172, which I though was megalols.

By no means are French cars overly great but it's just ironic that people jump on the bandwagon saying French cars are shit etc etc when the French have made some of the best hot hatches to ever touch tarmac.

People bum German and Jap stuff which on the whole probably is better made but from my experiences no where near as fun and 9/10 a bit of a let down really.

"yeah i used to have a saxo an it was shit kept breaking down all the time"

bet you didn't look after it though did you? regular servicing etc

"ummm... no. no i didn't lol"

he always rags it from cold aswell

so many people neglect their cars. just expect years of trouble free motoring with zero maintenance

saxos do feel cheap and the rattles have started to multiply pretty quickly as of late. had no problems though. none at all. so much fun to drive aswell. and i love the way people in bigger, more powerful cars tend to underestimate their performance!

is that aimend at me?

I already said they are fun etc, but its still shit.
Dont feel safe, feel like going to fall apart all the time (not just mine, just about every saxo 106 i have drove)
Sick of silly little niggly things going wrong....
ABS for one!

Couldnt insure anything else when i was 18/19 when i bought it, which was as quick.
And i am selling it. Been a good little car, but when you drive another car thats well built it makes it feel like shit when I get back in it.

Reason i am on here? because i had a saxo, and i dont spend all my time on here.

Main reason i loved my saxo was because it was cheap and shit, just got to a point when i was sick of the rattles, and want a well made car, and something that feels safe.

I am totally sick and tired of having this all the time "it's shit because it's french"

Usually from ford owners as well who don't like the fact I sold Rust for Must.

I then always refer them to this video - that shuts them the hell up lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae4RqTW5UDU
"My focus RS is the fastest on the road" - lol

Clio did really well to keep up though and its quicker through the corners.

The build quality is not good on most french cars and they do wrong abit more than other cars do.Yes you can be lucky and own one without many problems as i did,but in general they are abit shit compared to jap, german cars ect.

You get what you pay for really in life.

IMO saxo are awesome bits of kit.. What other motor could you find that cost next to nothing gives you a large smile everytime you drive it and the fact if something goes wrong... which does on all cars it is very very cheap to repair

win win for the saxo :y:

I have to lol at whoever it said the reason the cars are priced so cheaply is due to the fact people know they're going to fall apart... eh? It's because the "french" (PAS + renault/nissan) produce everything to a budget. Cheaper plastics and trim (and generally the materials) are used than their german/jap competitors. They also know how to effectively reduce costs further down the production line (this may mean the tolerances arent quite as high as those on a german car, but as long as it works it's shipped out ;))

After driving other cars the sax puts a larger smile on my face than others... yet the gearbox never feels solid jumping into the sax... but the MA box isn't great anyway and I think all saxo owners know this.

As said it all depeneds on how you look after any car. But i love my little frech tin cans. They are cheap on insurance, cheap on parts, easy to get modding parts for and alot of fun. All that makes it an ideal car imo.

Not quite what I said but I'll answer anyway.........

They ARE cheap because they fall apart. You've just given me about 5 reasons why they DO fall apart quicker than say a German/Jap car! Doesn't matter whether you're talking about mince fucking pies or motor vehicles, produced on a budget means it's rubbish!

Hey, I don't have anything against French cars, I had a Vts and a 172cup. I'd buy a Megane R26R if I had the money. Plus, the French have produced some of the most iconic cars of the last 20 odd years!

The point is, people buy French cars for reasons other than reliability and that is that.

If you look after your motor,it doesnt cost you in the long run:panic:if you just rag it round, dont replace worn parts and then sel it on,then you get saxo with lots of worn out parts, which then costs the nexted person£££££:y::p
