that thread all very good, but my budget is almost double...

Probably better off getting a decent HU. The SPL's are pretty nice anyway, have good mid-range, the hertz have an 'erm cant quite describe' sound lol. Better SQ, warmer might be the word im looking for ?!?! Are your SPL's amped at the moment ? And you have a sub powered by amp yars ?

3-400 is a very good budget! hit up some reviews on RE XXX 6.5c
IMO the best comps you will find in that price range! audio assult do them for 267 INCLUDING P+P which is a very reasonable price for them!
but you will need to run atleast 150 rms through each side! im sure you could pick up an amp that produces 300 @ 1Ohm or even 2 x 150/175 @ 2Ohm
with a decent head unit, and set up correctly you will be very pleased!
or ask Liam_B about JL Audio ZR comps! SQ on them, admitedly fantastic! but for the price and quality, xxx 6.5c
