I have just noticed that the fine for drink driving Is only about £200 to £300
this seems like nothing !
I would say it should be more like £1000 to deter people from doing it,
do you think that would be to harsh?

Personally don't think that anyone who drinks and drives deserves to have a license.

That's all I'm gonna say

It won't be a standard as that tbh

should be a perma ban imo

Should be a hefty fine at least a 3 year ban and when you get your licence back you should be made to pay to have one of those breathaliser things installed in your car where it wont start unless you give a negative breath sample

I love Welshmen

Ouch! lol

Even so £200 would be off putting to a lot of people. I dont drink anyway but even if I did the current fine is enough to make me think twice.

I guess it depends what money you got !
£200 for me could be spent In one night out !

Uncle got caught not along ago, being only just over the limit. He had 2 stellas and then an orange juice as he knew he'd be driving. He's got a year ban and a £200 fine.

He is a DJ so his job needs him to drive, he's self employed so is really struggling as well, he regrets even having those drinks, and I can't see him drinking at all when he know that he'll be driving when he gets his license back next year.

So although I agree with you partially - not every drink driver is a pisshead who's 4x over the limit.

srubs, JD had it

back OT: the laws unlikley to change, you can make it harsher, but people dont take it seriously as it is

people get banned from driving all the time, then go out and drive with no licence, they get caught, and the punishment is an extended ban - obv means nothing to them if theyre already driving illegally

same way prison isnt much deterrant to those who have been inside and "know the ropes" of it all.

less crime in various asian / african countries due to ridiculously harsh laws, get caught stealing and get your hand chopped off etc

pretty vague / un-intelligent responces there

what would a lifetime ban really do? considering a large ammount people on bans now still drive illegally

the question is, what punishment should be taken to those who re-offend, or get caught breaking the law whilst serving a ban

In my opinion, anybody who wants to risk their lives and others around them by having a drink and driving, doesn't deserve to sit behind the wheel of a car.

We need a zero tolerance system I reckon.

Those who re-offend should obviously have the book thrown at them etc, get a more severe punishment than an "extended" ban.

precisley :y:

you can enforce a lifetime ban on driving, but will it actually stop people driving?

if people drive now whilst serving a ban, what's to say they wont when a lifetime ban is given

people arent afraid of the law, especially when re-offending, theres a lot more to changing legislation for the better than people seem to think. especially seeing as the UK is a democracy, leaders cant be seen to be taking a totalitarian approach ;) people dont realise how complicated it is. they just say "this governments crap"

the UK will never enforce a zero tollerance system on any bit of statute legistlation though, as its a direct contradition to the case law part of our constitution

Do you get pissed and have you ever driven the car the day after doing so?

Quite often people wont drink and drive on the same day as they are against it but accidently drive when over the limit because its the next day.

Its not a simple case of tar everyone with the same brush imo, especially when some people like to put lots of alcohol in some food and not tell people.

Hence why each case is done independantly in court, IMO people who drive stoned are far far more 'idiotic' aswell when they usually go for a drive to get baked.

As a general rule, no I don't drive the next day either at all or until later on in the day, but it all depends on what happened the night before, e.g. how much I drank or when I stopped drinking etc.

The people that I say should never drive again are the ones who drive whilst drinking or straight after drinking. The morning after case is different, due to the fact that can be simply an accident, but like you say its down to individual cases.

But then like I say, I feel that those who drive straight after drinking shouldn't drive again.

i've done it a few times. driven straight home after a night out. 4/5 years ago though. stupid. seriously regret it and would never do it again. ever. mainly because i value my license too much. even 6 months would feel like a bloody long time with no car. luckily i've grown up a bit and didn't have to learn my lesson the hard way. getting pulled over. or even worse, hitting someone... two lives over for no good reason

Is just a daft thing to do plain and simple.

I don't know if this is just in scotland but there are loads of adverts on tv and radio etc saying that if you get cought a second time for drink driving they will confiscate you car for a year.

I thought first offence was a minimum of a year ban & the fine would be what ever the judge deemed?

Second offence is a minimum 3 year ban too.

Third offence & they ban you from drinking ;)

yeah I ment in addition to whatever punishment was handed out in the second instance they would also have your car off you.
