PROBLEM FIXED AT LAST!

i tried this mod and didn't work for me went to citroen and they wanted to replace the ignition (in excess of £300 with fitting). i went to a auto electrician and they found and fixed the problem within 45 mins. it was a relay that had gone on mine i HIGHLY ADVISE YOU CHECK THIS before changing your ignition as it only gost me £30.

hope this helps someone.

So being mechanically not electrically minded I knew I could be in trouble but tried the fix it all seems too easy and of course all three on mine (PAS, blower, heater) still buggered after crimping together.

I have both the battery and engine management lights on which no one else has mentioned

How can I check the alternator as I don't have a test meter.

Any other suggestions?

Your heater working only on the third setting comes down to a small resister on the blower that has broken, this can be replaced but it is quite tricky (blower is stashed behind the dash) there is quite a good thread on that if you do a search.
As for the combination of things not working have you tried simply wiggling the key in the ignition or the wires going into the back of the ignition as i did this to solve the same problem, eventually i replaced the small plastic switch section at the back of the ignition (£2 from scrappy) and this fixed all of the problems i was getting.
Hope that helps, plus bye bye everyone i have a new car (Audi S3 :y:) so am going to change my membership to Audi-sport.net.
Thanks 2 the peeps that have helped me in the past.

~bump~

I had the same problem with my Saxo Westcoast, 99 reg. One day the PAS, heater blowers and rear de-mister stopped working.! I struggled with it for about 3 weeks, took it to a garage who even after trying to charge me £60 for a diagnostics check could not find the fault... went to Halfords today and bought the tools and kit for the job shown here. Cost me no more than £14.

And the result? Works perfectly now! Very good resolution to a really shit problem lol... thanks v much for the help! Will be keeping an eye on it from now.

Reccomend this fix!

Hey There,

Just got under my dash to try this fix, and i carnt seem to find the two red wires anywhere going from my ignition barrel???

I've got as followed going from my ignition barrel

Black and brown - black connector - blue and brown, The blue wire seems to be thiner after the connector

Black and brown - gray connector - brown and white

Can anyone tell me if its any of these? or why i can't find the two red wires coming from the ignition barrel?

Any help would be very greatful,

Kind Regards.

if a fuse blows it has blown for a reason. You should NEVER replace it with a bigger fuse because you could then melt the wire of cause lots of bamage.

It's a bypass from the barrel which is now faulty this why you have got these 3 not working and by bypassing the barrel the current can complete it's circuit

yea but mine stays on all the timethe ignition is on so i am guessing the switch inside the ignition is stuck on. So say if i join the wires will they just come on when the engine is started ? thanks

I've just removed my steering column cover and found that i have the 2 red wires coming down from the ignition but the 2 brown wires are no where to be seen, does anyone know where they would have been moved to if someone else had tried the modification, it's really f-ing irritating cos all 3 aren't working.

3rd August 2010, 12:21
Before doing this check it not your alternator as I got AA out to my saxo as power steering, blowers and back demister not working. They noticed that the battery light stays on when you start the engine up and the 3 things dont work but as soon as you rev the engine a bit the battery light goes off and all 3 work again. He said that the alternator is not charging on tick over. Still ok to drive but will get worse so new alternator needed at a later date I think.

Ive just had these three problems, and my battery light had come on too, is this normal?

This might also sound stupid, but do you do this bypass thing with the engine running or not?

burgerfeet
6th October 2010, 18:09
Any heavy electrical loads can only be used once the alternator is charging. You could bypass these circuits but if you are not charging you will soon drain the battery and the car will not run. Eventually you will not be able to start the car anyway if the alternator is not charging the battery.

Fix....replace the alternator once you are sure it is that at fault.

Hi, I have a citroen saxo 1.5 diesel and today the power steering just packed up.
I have tried the modification and this has not worked.

The heater blower and rear demist work fine.

I have checked fuses and all seem fine. Where exactly is the relay?
Car has been fine until now.

Before I did the modification I unplugged the wires and just inserted a link wire just to try it and I swear it seemed that the steering was lighter, so I made a good strong wire link with correct terminals and now this does not work.

Any ideas where the relay is? and can anybody suggest anything else please.

Hi,

really sorry to ask as i know it will have been asked a million times already. just i dont want to go trawling through 15 pages looking for the answer,

My battery died earlier, changed it and had the problem of all 3 not working. i did the fix (which i know works in most cases as i had to do it on my older saxo and it worked then) but after trying the fix i still have no joy, the battery light is on all the time, do you think its the alternator that needs replacing?

The first thing you need when messing with any electrics is a multi meter. Start the car, test voltage, If its 11-12v then the alternator can't be working, if it is 13-14v then the alternator is working and your problem is else where.

I have absolutely no experience with cars, i don't even have a license, I've never owned a car, nor have i ever tried to repair one before. Yet this thread managed to guide me well enough to fix my mom's car (helping her save the 300$ fix at the insanely expensive mechanics here in Denmark)

This was enough to save a hell of a hassle with the coldfront over scandinavia this winter. (and it saved enough money for us to have a decent christmas after all!)

Can't thank you enough!!

Hey all, I got to page 6 of 15 and didnt see my problem.

Got an Eastcoast 1.1i.
Just my demisters don't work, is it just a standard fuse? or a relay? and how do you check if a realy switch is knackerd? Blackening of the contacts??
Is a clicking of a relay normal? e.g. when my wipers are on i hear a click before and after they do their cycle.just wondered if its a sign that its on its way out. (Possibly a really silly question to ask as i understand its a switch, kind of) :geek:

Loads of questions but any help would be ace,

HI,
My problem is that it is only the fan that does“t work. i have take a look at the fuses and none of the are broken. so i toke a multimeter and put them into the cable back of the 3 ways switch in the front and it shows 12v, then i toke a cable and wired 2 of cables together in the stick with out the switch. and nothing is working. so is it correct that it is my fan there are broken, and if it is how do i get in to that ???? because im thinking when im getting 12v through the switch it is not the wiring or fuse there should be the problem correct ???????????????

I have just aquired a 1996 VSX Saxo this week with the above problem. Its been stationary so I am not sure about the power steering.

Following your thread , I have exposed the three connectors coming from the ignition barrel but the brown one has 2 thick red wires coming from the barrel side with only one thick pink one one the other side of the connector.
I've looked into the connector on the pink wire side and there is no second electrical lug present. In other words only one of the red wire is connected to the pink wire. The second red wire has no outlet

Everthing else in the vehicle is working with the connector open (apart from the fan and HRW) and and a lamp test shows a current flowing from the pink wire.

Appreciate any help

Also does anybody know which relays do what ?

On my 1996 VSX (HRW and blower not working) I don't have two brown wires from the brown connector and two reds on the other side.. I have just one orange on one side and two reds on the other . Both the reds are dead and the orange shows a current when the vehicle is running.

Just to bump this up, cracking thread this.

my rear demister & heaters were actually dead aswel, don't think I checked them before I just assumed as I thought they were blowing on the way to work.

I found the brown connection block & as a test I rounded the circuit off with a 10p piece, started the car and boom PAS/heaters & demister all back on, going to go down maplins shortly to get some wire/terminals to do it properly.

Thanks rep!

Ok if all three of the above have stopped working this is what you do.

Remove the steering column cover (held on by 2 torx) and under the steering column is a light brown plastic connector with 2 red wires going in the right side and 2 brown wires coming out the left side.

Cut the 2 brown wires and join them together. Make sure you solder the wires or use a proper crimp connector and make sure u use insulation tape to cover it. and tape up the 2 lose ends of the brown wires.

In other words what amp rating are the brown wires?

Hi all,

As posted on the recent power steering problem post, I have the same problem as azzer1987. Rear De-mister hasn't worked for ages but im not bothered about that. My power steering doesn't work when the car/engine bay is cold. For example, its worked all summer no problem but last winter and this one now its only working when car as been ticking over or driven then left ticking over for a while and engine bay is warm.

Im an aircraft engineer by trade so im pretty good at fault finding but can't think what it could be. At first thought it could possibly be water contamination in the fluid then freezing blocking the pump, but its not been that cold (im gonna change the fluid anyway).

I changed the relay last year and it didn't solve it. I can't be a mechanical fault because it wouldn't be intermittent, it would be fu*ked all the time. The only other thing I can think of is it could the cold affect the electrical resistance in the circuit via a bare wire somewhere???

Any ideas or experience of this???

Dave

Another happy customer. Did this mod yesterday and everything's back to normal.

Took it round the garage told him that the PAS, heaters and demister weren't working - he said he used to work for Citroen and the easiest thing to do is this mod.

Wanted £50 to do it like, so I did it myself.

hi

i had this problem come up recently, power steering, heater blower and rear screen demister..

i proceeded to carry out this mod and the red wires underneath the dash are already loose, with the brown wires no where to be seen..

i need to know where the brown wires initially trace back to? where do they start out?

thanks in advance!

Hi Guys!

Had my Saxo since July last year and have had this problem on and off since driving it, before now replacing the fuse has always solved the problem. However Thursday it happened again so as per usual I replaced the fuse, this time the new fuse just popped straight away. Along with the other three I tried after this, including a 30 and a 40 amp fuse. So the weekend me and my brother (mechanic for 15 years) did this mod, and once again the fuse just popped. We checked the feed from the barrel and all seems fine, we disconnected the rear screen heater and the power steering seperatley and still no luck.

So anyone got any other idea's? We where thinking maybe a burnt out wire shorting it out but could do with a wiring diagram to trace where the wires go, if anyone could help us out with that too, that would be great.

Cheers Mat!

Just as an update;

I did this mod on my VTR today after visiting Maplin for the components.

They sell a 30A wire for £1.79 per metre (minimum purchase 1m) and the necessary spade connectors in a pack of 10 for £1.89.

Gives at least 5 chances of getting it right for under £4.

Thanks for the write up. :y:

Right i think i might be having this problem now also? ive changed the pump and every time i now turn the ignition on it blows the fuse inside the car that controls the pas, heater and de-mister. Is this what happens if the barrel is faulty or would this be down to another issue. The car still works fine but just cant seem to get the above three items to work. Help would be awesome.

hi everyone, first post for me (although i've been using this place for all kinds of help for about a year!)

my gf called out the RAC for this pas, blower, demister problem combo and the guy did the same mod as the beginning of the thread and it worked a treat.

as it was the middle of the day, my gf didnt think to test everything out (like lights).... when i got home i found that the dashboard doesn't illuminate when you put the headlights on. the panel lights (battery, handbrake etc) light up, but i cant see how fast i'm driving in the dark! the clock also had the wrong time on it. first thing i checked were fuses, they are all fine.

i have read before that the clock and the dash lighting are connected. given that this happened after the RAC chap did the mod that this thread is based on, could anyone give me any pointers on what to look for - dislodged cables etc.
any help greatly appreciated. i am a bit of a novice though so be gentle :)

Hi
I put a thread on here about not having any PAS then read through further on here and have now found out like many others that I have no heater and no rear demister. We have checked and it looks like one of the red wires from the barrel is broken inside? there doesnt seem to be much room to get to it?
Any ideas please as we are sure this is the problem but if we can fix it ourselves then that would be great.
Thank you

Can anyone tell me where this wire goes to?

Not had my new phase 1 vts long and these 3 stopped working. I found this post and thought brilliant this looks simple

However upon looking I found the red wires from the ignition straight away but they were already disconnected and the other wire is no where to be seen...

Thinking perhaps it's been done already by a previous owner but before this point somewhere and theyve torn the rest of the wire out? Or hid it away somewherw

Obviously at the moment x im quite lost without blowers :(

Thanks in advance

I was skeptical about this... But I thought fuck it.

You don't need to disconnect the battery to do this. I cut the wires and touched them and didn't die or get shocked, anything for a cheap buzz these days.. ;)

Personally I doubt it drains your battery since the wires do not have a permanent live feed.

Initially when I completed the bodge it didn't work, so I cried a little. But saw a 25A fuse next to me... Shoved that in and tried again.. Worked a treat!!

Thanks for this mate.

If all 3 have gone again and it's not a fuse then it's something connected to the wiring that you done the fault it's self is the ignition barrel and by doing this fix it bypasses the ignition barrel so you have two options new barrel and keys all around or redo the fix with all new wire

boarer2004
29th March 2013, 10:03
Also you can try and turn the car on with heaters on and wiggle the key

Ok if all three of the above have stopped working this is what you do.

Remove the steering column cover (held on by 2 torx) and under the steering column is a light brown plastic connector with 2 red wires going in the right side and 2 brown wires coming out the left side.

Cut the 2 brown wires and join them together. Make sure you solder the wires or use a proper crimp connector and make sure u use insulation tape to cover it. and tape up the 2 lose ends of the brown wires.

My battery light came on and a buzz noise inside car when driving in heavy rain at weekend. Had rear demist on, wipers on high and blower on 3 (as 1 and 2 settibgs dont work, why??) on windscreen as misting up. Prob drain on battery all 3 going so pulled over. Put in park n handbrake(auto mk1 1999) and prob fixed. Didnt turn engine off or anything n been fine since.

Would the above issue be tge same and methods offered fix it ie blower will work on 1 n 2 n demist button b brighter etc???

Hi folks,
I've been through this entire thread hoping to find my problem, but haven't, any suggestions welcome because I'm totally stuck.

My daughter has a 2003 1.5D and after driving about 10 miles to work the other day, the power steering pump wouldnt go off, even with the engine. It drained the battery eventually.
Heater fan working on I and II but not on III, HRW is OK. Thought it might be a faulty relay, so changed that but still the same issue. As soon as I connect the battery, the power steering pump starts.
Been under it tonight and the wires from the power steering pump look OK, is it worth checking the alternator? The motor starts fine once the battery has a bit of juice in it but the steering pump knocks everything out with a bit of load. No random lights on in the dash or anything.
Cant see it being a fuse with the HRW and heater fan working. Somebody said take out all the fuses and reset the ECU, but surely the battery being disconnected for a while would have the same affect.
Totally stuck and any help appreciated.

I bought a 2002 saxo 1.1 Desire lastnight, The owner told me that he had replaced the PAS pump and all it needed was a relay. I took the old relay out and noticed that the plastic around one of the spades was slightly melted. The owner said he was told to fit a new relay BEFORE fitting the PAS pump (for whatever reason I do not know) Anyway I went to a breakers and bought 4 relays as they were only £1 each and didn't like the idea of having to travel back and forth all day if I only bought one. I tried one of the relays in the breakers yard and the PAS seemed to work for about 8 seconds then just stopped.

The heater always works fine as does the rear demister.

I've checked the fuses and I even tried the "fix". I also smacked the pump itself with a hammer, but nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Before cutting wires or buying a new ignition barrel, check that the engine is running first. The heated rear window and heater fan are disabled until the engine is running (activated by the alternator) so that you aren't drawing loads of current when starting the engine :detective:

No need to cut wires, I did this mod and no difference fault still re appeared. I obtained a non transponder ign lock and switch barrel from e bay as an aftermarket aftermarket purchase. Split the lmechanical lock part from the plastic switch part which has all the wiring going into it. This can be separated by the external screw on the metal body. You will need a security screwdriver set for this. Remove the existing lock barell and switch on the car .take to bench and do the same split the mechanical from the switch. Put aside the switch part. Fit the new switch from the aftermarket to your existing mechanical lock barrel , reassemble into the steering column. I found replacing the cables the connectors were different colours but went with the cable wiring colours matching the existing harness. So far so good. You will need a security screw set to remove replace the small screw holding the ignition barrel in the car.
