Looking for a cheap to run small car and the saxo looks a good car.
She will have about £1500 to spend .
Is there anything i should look out for when viewing a saxo, ie any common niggles or faults.
Are they reliable and what insurance group are they?
What do they do to the gallon?
Thanks.

to keep insurance down look at the westcoast / furio models with a set of vtr/vts wheels they look pretty much the same but are only group 5.

It all depends mate. £1500 she can pick up a 2000 - 2002 mk2 model with good milage, mot and tax. Best place to look at is pistonheads.com.
There isnt really specific niggles or faults but if it has 12 months mot then your good to go.
Insurance groups depends on engine sizes. I am only 17 and have a VTR which is group 7 and I'm paying 1600 a year fully comp. If you want cheaper insurance then go for a 1.4 or the best choice for cheap insurance is a 1.1 which also has a very good fuel economy.
Anyway, good luck with the car search. :y:

Easily get a very good condition Furio (1400cc) OR VTR (1600cc) for that cash.
Common fault to check are;
Worn stub pins / bearings. Can normally see a knackerd beam a mile off (eg top part of rim is pointing in).
Just grab all the wheels and give them a shake..
Cv boots and driveshafts.
Clutch release bearing (can be heard when engines running in neutral, it squeaks)
If the engines 'tappy' could just be tappets need adjusting (30-40 at a garage).
Check for 'mayo' under oil cap etc.
And mpg is around 35-45mpg in the vtr dependant on driving motorway/town.
So i'd imagine the 1.4 would do 40-50mpg.

looks like a 1.1 will be ideal.

i passed my test about 6 weeks ago,
i bought myself a R reg 1.4i for £595, it needs some tlc,(a good service basically), cost me around £60.
it cost me £580 fully comp for insurance. www.parker.co.uk i found to be a good site to get general info off when i was looking to buy a car.
i get around 40 odd miles to the galloon depending on how i drive.

Depends really for best fuel return then your best off with the 1.5 diesel or 1.1 petrol - however both of these engines arn't really ideal for overtaking etc due to lack of power
If its just going to be a town runabout then I would recommend the 1.4 furio or 1.6 VTR model personally - plus there is power there if there is the need to overtake

1.1 models are the basic flat arch one's. Unless you find one that has a vt kit that has been put on it.
For 1.5k i'd get her a nice low milage mk2 1.4 furio :)

If shes 17 - 18, have a budget, going to get her own insurance and need good fuel economy then 1.1 is the way forward atleast for the first year.

If you want the cheapest insurance ever available for young driver who just passed their test get a corsa 1.0i. They are insurance group 1 + go with quinn direct.

PS: They are slow, you could compare them to a 50cc moped on 4 wheels but if shes a new driver and just wants a little car for a year also to get insurance prices down then it will be a good little car.

I'm 17 and have a VTR which is a lot better than the Pug 106 1.1 I had

my Sister passed, and she got a 206 1.4 8v.
Same engine as the furio/westcoast and her insurance is under 1k. 17 0 ncb.
it's arguable that the higher cc engines get better mpg. Because they don't need as much gas to get upto speed..

She can easily afford insurance on 1.4 8v. Insurance for girls are always cheaper.

she is a new driver so a nice slow car for a year is what we are looking for.
Doubt she will be doing much overtaking for a while.
The insurance is a factor as it will be about £700 + until she builds up her no claims.

Yes, I did say that if you read my previous posts and the end of that sentence.

Tbh mate i think the 1.4 furio would be a better example to buy her.
My mate had a 1.1 and one mate had 1.4. The 1.4 used to always get better mpg. Possibly down to a few factors but the main reason imo is he didnt have to put his foot to the floor to get upto the speed limit. (100s of other factors that could affect mpg though).
I would get an insurance quote on the 1.1 then the 1.4 furio, you may well be suprised.
The 1.4 has better interior, electric windows, better styling, and she won't hate you for buying her a rubbish first car ;)
A furio isn't a fast car for a first car, I'd class the 1.6 VTR/VTS as a fast car for a first car.

1.6 VTR is a fast car for a first car. VTS's aint because no new driver can get insured on them unless they are 21+. I wanted a VTS so bad but couldnt find anyone who would insure me I couldnt even get a stupidly highly priced quote, I got refused quotes haha.

Saxo 1.1 really arnt too bad, not exactly "slow" for what they are and are very economical, im very happy with mine :)

They are not bad at all but then again you can get insured on a 1.4 for a few extra quid.

i had a 1.0 for my first car, it was poor slow, and i wanted shot of it asap, needed RAGGED to get speed up anywhere, if i could go back and had looked into what kind of cars i could have had for that money - id have reconsidered.
the factors of buying a 1.1 are they are... ugly - they are a flat arch and dont look too sweet, whereas the "westcoast" models (1.4 engine) have the body kit and look presentable and its a "cool" Car.
Id search about for a 1.4 furio or a westcoast for your daughter, a car thats styleish is something young kids want nowadays, i would know ;) im a brat myself :bump:
The cost of insurance wont be too much, but mind you, its a struggle to find insurance under £1200 even on a 1.0, i tend to find cars that are 1.2 are cheaper to insure than 1.0's
