Hi,
I got a meguiars clay kit for christmas now I don't really know anything about detailing so any tips from the pro's around here? From what i've seen most people have been looking up to James :P.
Cheers :y:

i have this aswell, funked knows if i used it properly, but the paint felt so smooth.
basically i washed the car, squirt the quick detailer stuff on, rubbed with the clay, and wiped the excess off with the cloth

Since your new to claying, this is the process i undertake:
1) Make sure you give the car a very good wash first, to remove as much "normal" dirt as possible - you don't have to dry the car to clay it.
2) There are different strengths of clay - from mild to agressive, if this is the first time using one, I would use a mild version to start with
3) Cut the clay bar up into smaller pieces, I usually get 4/5 bits from 1 bit of clay.
4) Heat the clay up in a jar of hot water - makes it easier to use.
5) Use lots and lots of lube (I usually take the lube and water it down 50/50 - and use lots!!)
6) I find it better to work in straight lines across then up and down...you will hear the clay picking up dirt and it will be resistance when you start to use it, but after a few passes it will 'glide' across the paint with no effort and no noise.
7) After claying each section, dry the paint off with a good microfibre (MF) cloth, then your paint should be smooth and shiney!!!
8) I would always follow a claying up with a good wax/sealant afterwards - gives the newly clayed paint some protection.
9) Stand back and admire your nice paint!

As above really Exige.......after washing claying is the next stage. It quite simply prepares the paintwork for polishing, sealing and waxing.
Have a look on Youtube for videos on how to clay if you arent sure.
Oh and knowbody looks up to me buddy....im like 4ft tall lol

What better ones would you recommend? I clayed my car with this kit at the begining of winter, Should it be done again in the summer?

Sonus Green is awesome imo as long as the car hasnt many contaminates as its veryyyyyy mild clay.

Hence the title James "Ultra Fine"
I used it once as i was a bit skeptical about claying for the first time, but i found that it took all the shite off the car, did take some time, but there is less chance of your marring the paint

For first time i would use an aggressive clay then about every 6 months after that use a milder clay
not sure if you can get sonus grey anymore but it is good stuff, bilt hamber i rate too, plus you can just use water for that making it ideal for people on a budget

moxy89
31st December 2009, 18:21
when i clay i will do it twice a year..but depend on the clay you can clay more often if using a mild clay...
J222JRA
31st December 2009, 19:21
You should clay each time you polish imo......and you should only need to polish twice a year.

Overclay????????
Saxoo_VT_Whatt
2nd March 2010, 22:20
well people sayy too clay the car once every six months ive clayed mine 2 times in 2 weeks is this bad ?
J222JRA
2nd March 2010, 22:34
hmmmm well tbh its pointless as the paint should still be smooth after 2 weeks....unless the paintwork wasnt sealed / waxed afterwards to protect it.
You have to remember any protection you have put on the car will be removed when claying.
I clay a max of twice a year....just keep adding more sealant and wax whenever i get the time (alot)
Saxoo_VT_Whatt
2nd March 2010, 22:46
yeah was waxed right after mate :)
will this affect my paint at all though ?
J222JRA
2nd March 2010, 22:51
The clay is very smooth in the megs clay kit so it will do no harm...its just a waste of wax though.
If you are looking at getting the finish better why not try a better polish, sealant and wax???

How deep are your pockets?
You could easily spend £100 on polish, sealant and a wax
