Well, I had to learn pretty quick at the rally this morning, as I'd not had any time to practicve taking moving car pics. smileys/smiley5.gif

The AI servo came in handy smileys/smiley2.gif

I tried a few types of shooting, but think I concluded it was best to just throw the camera into sport mode and quick focus and shoot. Seemed to work pretty good.

I'd really appreciate some tips from you guys, for when I attend my next motorposrt event.

Overall, I was very happy with the Sigma 300mm lens! smileys/smiley14.gif

nice pics mate, like No.4, think you have done well matey im also looking for some tips cos i wanna do some stuff like that, one thing you could try i duno how good the results would be is to have a curtain flash so you get a bit of motion blur then a sharp captured image, gives a good sense of movement, but like i said i havent tried it on cars before.

One advice: set the Camara to shutter priority (Tv setting) and then the shutter time to about the length of you focus, maybe a tad higher. Just start at 1/250 with the focal lengths you used and start experimenting. Then when you take pics, pan the camera. That way the car is shart, while the wheels are moving and the background is blurry, giving some sense of speed.
If you look at pic #10 for example it looks as if the car is standing still, but when you use the technique mentioned above you get much more dynamic pics.

Have a look at this example:

Flashing and cars is a no go because of unwanted reflections. Panning is the way!

O and set the AF to 'servo'! That way it keeps focussing while following a moving object.

Thanks for your help Fred!!

I was aware that using the sports mode, the shutter speeds would be uber-quick, which would give static looking shots... but as I HAD TO get the shots of Ant's saxo, I didnt want to risk anything else. smileys/smiley17.gif

I did do some shots at lower shutter speeds, and I agree, there is more sense of movement.

Panning... Hmm, I'll have to give that one a try smileys/smiley2.gif

Fred's right, Tv is the best mode to go for when shooting motorsport.

For panning shots of cars side on I usually use something like 1/160s to blur out the background. Head on shots you can use up to 1/500s and for 3/4 shots around 1/320 is a good place to start, but remember to track your subject!

Tv means "shutter priority" which means you set the shutter speed and ISO setting and the camera sets your aperure. Don't worry about depth of field when panning because your panning action will blur out the background anyway.

Obviously those shutter speeds are just a guide and you might want to start a bit faster, but too fast and you end up with what look like cars parked on a circuit.

Q..why has ants sax still got the tow bar in the front?

in case he stacks it and needs to be towed out of the stage.

What you also might want to try is the Custom Function feature.

Set CF 4 so that the * button is used to focus.

The advantage this gives over using the shutter button to focus is this:

When you track with the shutter button half depressed to focus, the camera meters for whatever light is present when you first start tracking. So you could start tracking in a nice bright area, the car could go into a darker area, and when you fully depress the button the shot is captured but there's a chance of under exposure.

Using the * button to focus removes this. The star button just focuses and that's it. When you hit the shutter to take the shot, the camera meters and hey presto no exposure issues.

Don't say I don't do anything for you...
