View Full Version : insurance is a pi**take

insurance in this country really is a pisstake isnt it

i'm 19, i live at home as a student

i dont use my car that much

but in the last year i've had 2 incidents, which i shal explain in a bit, neither of which were really my fault, one was circumstancial, and wouldnt have happened if the circumstances were different, the other was NOT my fault, but yet i am to blame aparantly

my insurance was 1292 for the year in january last year on my 306 phase 1 1.4 litre

then in march i changed to a 1.4 litre phase 2, which put it up about 500 quid, but i transfered a years no claims i had built up as a named driver on my grans polocy across and it cancled out all but about 30 quid of it, so i paid the 30 quid

then in september i changed to a corsa C SRi 1.4
it put my insurance up another 30 quid

which is fair enough

in june i had a crash
the circumstances were, i was on a side road, (well, the dirt track round the back of my house, its access to the back of the house where we park)
i came out, and there was a van parked to my left and another to my right, i couldnt see what was coming, i edged out for a good 3 minutes, an inch at a time, and couldnt hear anything, then from nowhere, wham, van comes past, and knocks my numberplate off, he pulls up on the other side of the street, gets out, starts shouting various obscenities at me (first time i'd had a crash, so i just sat there stunned) ...someone walking past picked my numberplate up and gave me it through the window
he then got in his van and fooked off
i thought that was the end of it, there was no damage to his van, and virtually nothing to my car, just a scrape on my numberplate, and a slight graze on the front of the bumper which i polished out later with some tesco value bumper shine

either way, some guy rang me later (how the hell he got my mobile number i do not know, as i did not exchange any details with the guy, didnt get a word in edgeways tbh) claiming he was the owner of the van, but not the driver at the time
so we swapped details over the phone,

4 - 5 weeks later i get a letter through the post from AMV law saying that he is sueing me for whiplash and loss of business, for the sum of aprox 2500, i did tell my insurance company he got out of the van and shouted stuff at me, but they said i was at fault, and they'd have to just pay him, i told them, no, fight it, so they are currently engaged in fighting it

next thing to happen, july, my idiot of a friend was sat on the windowcill of my car, with no seatbelt on, and a cop car behind me,
stupid pigs gave me 3 fooking points for it, not for that he wasnt wearing his seatbelt, but for CU50 Dangerous load, causing potential danger to driver and/or passanger
i see where he was coming from, but i had no ability to stop him exactly, i pulled over as soon as i realised what he was doing, but they still did me....arseholes
got 3 points and a 60 quid fine, and he got a 30 quid fine, he paid both fines, then bought me a new set of tyres, and gave me 100 quid to say sorry, so ...wasnt so bad...

next incident occoured in my corsa, in october just after i bought it, was in a que of traffic, where it was like this:

- - - - - - - - -

where the double spaced dash was the gap i was leaving
dashes refering to car
it was raining lightly, and i didnt know the car, had only had it a couple of days, he slammed on and i went into the back of him, because i slammed on and nothing happened, my 306 had abs, my corsa doesnt, and i didnt know it had terrible budget tyres on, and yeah

his car was a 08 plate mondao and the damage done, was a plastic piece of trim on the back bumper was popped out of place, and one single plastic clip was broken,

i got a letter through a few weeks ago about it, direct line settled the claim at 1100 quid, as they felt that was fair...

NO IT WASNT :n:

and then they have the cheek to give me a renewal price of 2550

so i rang around, did a few comparison sites, and everyone else wanted atleast 3k
i'm a poor student on 0 income, my gran offered to pay upto what it was last year (1292) but it looks like i'll have to hang up my keys for a year, i simply cant aford it

wow, well, saxos aren't cheap to insure anyway, with 2 incidents, im not surprised to be honest.

simple fact is, insurance companies dont want you to drive, you cost them money, think of it from their point of view.

they have to insure someone whos crashed twice (therefore more likely too again)

would you bet on a horse to win a race, thats fallen at two previous races? not unless the odds are really good right,

well its the same for insurance companies, they know they are more likely to have to pay out, so they will give you a stupid premium and a stupid excess, so that if you do crash, the loss for them is minimum if any

alternatively, you dont get insured with them, and they are safe, and their other insured persons are safe from you

(not saying your a bad driver, but statistically, thats how you will be viewed)

to them its business, they dont care if your a charity worker giving all your money to the poor, they want to see the Benjamins

im 19, 0ncb, 0 accidents, £1700tpft with £650 excess, meaning the claim would need to be £2350 before my insurance company make a loss, not bad eh... next year, im looking at about £1100 premium, so thats £1700 + £1100 + £650 excess = £3450 claim before the company make a loss

i know its shit for us young drivers, but i know id charge the maximum i could if i owned the company, so thats what they do

problem is, i'm not a statistic, is there not a company who does an evaluation of the person rather than just look at the 1's and 0's?

i hope, its not just me that thinks that neither of those accidents were primerily my fault

You went in to the back of the car so it was your fault!
You cant rely on things like abs to help you out and stop you crashing!
Fact was you were driveing too close to safely stop!
Id imagime the points you got carry a hefty levy on them!
You were the driver you could of stopped him sitting where he did!

You pulled out in to the path of another car,so again you are at fault

your a liability and i can see why they want so much from you!
I hope you do hang your keys up, the roads will be a safer place, but dont expect the insurance to come down much the year after

To be fair you cant really blame the insurance company that you crashed twice due to your inexperience on the road. The fine and points because of your mate again you should have stopped it as your liable for any one of your passengers.

Just suck it up pay the insurance and learn a lesson and be a bit more careful in the future :y:

insurance is defiently a pisstake i bought a 1.1 forte for first car its standared im 17 and male got insurance quotes through confused and others cheapest on own insurance fully comp is 2600 and for third party fire and theft its 2100 will go third party fire and theft because if damage car i wouldnt claim anyway just fix it myself because insurance wont go up so save a bit of money but how do they get 17yr olds to pay nearly 3000 for a car the cars worth 1600 now i see why a lot of youngsters drive with no insurance

whine whine whine, u should man up and take the fall.

the van situation - ok, not really your fault because we all know that some junctions are particularly bad. in some cases just get out your car and have a look and if somethin is comin maybe ask him to let you out.

the mate situation - i dont believe you for a second, your young and your mate was dicking about in your car, weve all been there, your just one of the unlucky ones who got caught, no way can someone go from sitting beside you to sitting on the window area without you noticing and stopping the car. P.S your mate is a cock for doing that in the first place and for letting you take that hit.

as for hitting the mondeo - dont give us a shitty dash space dash space diagram and patrionise some inexperienced and some well experienced drivers that not having ABS brakes was the reason for that crash. no one slams on their brakes for no aparant reason, when your driving on carriageways/ motorways you need to be looking at least 2 cars ahead for brake lights coming on.

ive been driving for 3 years and never even been close to an incident.
i drive a bit carelessly when I have the road to myself but ffs dont blame other people when you have had 3 incidents.

YOU ARE THE COMMON DENOMINATOR.

sorry to hear you cant afford to pay insurance but maybe its what you need to learn to be more sensible.

Said it all really...

Hit someone from behind, 9.5 times out of ten, regardless of circumstances, its your fault...and if you try to fight it then you get done for not driving with due care and attention?

As for the van incident, you pulled out infront of him, ok maybe a biatch of a junction, but your fault.

And as for your mate, I also dont believe he can go from sitting next to you, then sat in the window without you noticing....your liable for anyones actions in that vehicle, bend over and take it like a champ :D

Unlucky in that your inexperience has shown up in quite spectacular fashion.
I'd rather go without a car for a year than pay that much in insurance.
Time to realise the situations were your fault to some extent. The last two 100% against you frankly. ABS increases braking distance but gives steering control. You were simply too close. If you dont accept you are to blame you will do the same again rather than learn from your mistakes.
Take a break. Blag lifts everywhere. Save money and get insurance in a years time.
