swapping petrol caps

got a new petrol cap with a key,
to take the old petrol cap out, i need to use the key that starts and locks the car,
have a different key for the new petrol cap,
but the key doesnt come out the petrol cap unless the caps in the car,
meaning the key to start the car is now stuck in the old petrol cap lol,
that probably doesnt make sense, but i dont see how im gunna be able to swap the caps over lol
