Hi, hope someone can help

2000 saxo vtr, 90k

going down the motorway last night the car started juddering a bit and then lost power and the engine temp went right down. the funny looking orange light came on that looks a bit like a gearbox/helecopter which i assume must be the engine management light.

5th gear was losing speed unless i was going downhill, 4th was just about holding it at 50/60, had to be in 3rd up hills at about 40.

reading around, it sounds like a coil/spark plug/ecu problem but most people who've had this problem didn't find it happened while driving down the motorway. is it likely to be anything else?

i'm taking it to a garage tomorrow to get the fault code but thought i might ask first.

are the coil and plugs easy enough to replace myself?

also it sounds like a lorry, i assume it is misfiring on one or several cylinders. i still managed to make it back the last 60 miles though without anything nasty happening

Wont misfiring on 'several' as you only have 4 ;)

on a serious note; It'll probs be your coilpack. But may aswell change the plugs while your there.

If you don't have a Citroen spark plug remover (like me) Then you have to take the inlet off to access the spark plugs with a socket (10mm long reach).

Not the end of the world, as whilst it's off.. you might aswell Clean the ICV, and the butterfly throttle. etc.

I'd certainly change these before wasting money on a diagnostics test tbh.

several is more than two isn't it haha... this is going to be painful, i can feel it in my bones. also i have no idea what an ICV or butterfly throttle is.

will the ecu/em light reset itself if this fixes the problem?

thanks

Yes once it's fixed, the light will be removed.

Wont be that painful tbh mate. 50 quid will get it a new coilpack and plugs.

ICV is the idle control valve. There's A guide on here where it shows you where it is etc. And the butterfly throttle, is what opens when you press the loud pedal. Gets pretty black and dirty. Therefore cleaning it will increase the airflow, as it's smoother. Resulting in a slightly better throttle response.

Get them tools out buddy :D
