Hi on my mk2 saxo on the mot, one off the things that it failed on was the handbrake, it said " handbrake efficiency below requirements " Could i just tighten the handbrake or would it require new shoes ? what do saxo's have ? thanks, Guy

If your using drums then the auto adjust mechanism will be seized up. Best to open the drums, give them a clean out, rough up the shoes with sandpaper, check for leaks from brake cylinders then adjust the mechanism so the shoes are as far out as possible without touching the drum (slight catching is fine as long it lets the wheel spin without slowing it down). You will have to grind/file the lip off the drum to get them back on after you have adjusted them up.
Tightening the cable will only bring the "biting point" of the handbrake lower down and wil not make them work any better.
