rite my battery while running is reading 18 watts not right changed battery still the same so it must be alternator cos the battery light cam on when trying to rev it a little. if the alternator has gone will it cause the dash lights not to working properly like flashing and also when i turned the steering wheel fans would cut in and out. and also after all that power steering stopped working. not risking driving it.
after all that i found a alternator in my garage but for a mk1 with the 2 bolt on parts for wires and mine is a plug version is there a why if i used the cable end off a mk1 loom and connect it to mine so i can use the mk1 altrnator saves me trying to get another one.
many thaks liam.
if u have pics to help will be great thanks

sounds like battery or alternator.
Put the battery on charge and see what voltage is across it with a multimeter after an hour or so.
With it running see what the battery voltage is then.
Check the voltage the alternator is putting out
Check the resistance from alternator to battery

18 watts is nothing when you use 70Amps to convert it to volts
14volts is what you're aiming for

18 volts isn't right !! I'd change the alternator asap tbh - you not modified anything else? Like changed the crank pulley? If not then get another alternator.
what's the battery voltage when its just sat disconnected from the car?
Yeh, basically the big ring terminal is for it to output the power ot the starter motor, then onto the battery.
The smaller one is for it to sense when it's not producing enough voltage and the battery light comes on.
Can switch over to a mk1 on, easy to do

I have converted mine the other way, going from a 1 wire loom, to a 2 wire plug. I just used one of the wires on it and it worked fine. Can use trial and error if you want - the colours on yours are likely to be different to mine. I used the green one though, as opposed to the pink one.

Yeh no probs, re-check the voltages when you've fitted the new alternator just to make sure.
