View Full Version : Driving with Fog Lights!

I am generally a chilled out, calm driver. Never get road rage...Though for some reason people driving with their fog lights on really, really winds me up! :rage: :boxing: I just find there's no need for it unless there is reduced visibility.
A few of my mates drive with them on and alway's pose the argument, "it's not illegal". So naturally i googled it, i can't really find much. Can anyone shed any light on this? What do you think, :y: or :n: ?
Highway Code Here (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069859)

It is illegal. £30 fine.

7th January 2010, 17:14
I mean, you have this bit of the highway code:
236
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.
I guess you could say its illegal in that sense?

theyre more dull than a fog light, and aren't they classed as spot lihts, or driving lights?
I cant stand pricks who have their fogs on, they never seem to understand whats going on when i strobe mine at them and finish with full beam. lol

nice work posting the facepalm picture though... did you make that yourself?
i bet you'll make a joke next saying "fog lights add 20bhp!!!!111one111! (i'm a cock)"
and i'll reply "no mate... they make the car LOOK better"

I used google, though source is in the corner ;) I wasn't going to make a sarcastic comment about it adding bhp, i was however actually going to ask, why you think it looks better? Any specific car?

...i was taking the piss.
and as for any specific car... 106s look good (when people re-wire them to come on with the rear fogs), most bmws, any cars with small suttle (and usualy round) fog lights

Did not on the spot fines double to £60 last year? Repeat offences would see you in court that could see significant fines or jail time. Though I think after the police stopped you once you would have to be a complete moron to do it again.

I got done for it a coupl eof years back. £30 fine. No points (non endorsable penalty).
In my defence, it had been foggy and was throwing it down with rain, and visibility was very very poor. However the weatehr cleared and I genuinly forgot to switch the fogs off. Police car passed literally 2 minutes after th erain stopped, pulled me and fined me. Wouldn't believe the weather up the road was as bad as I was making out

surely having them on during rain is bad considering the reflection off teh road will make it worse for others ?

Yes if you ask most traffic officers there a lot more likely to pull you in the wet for doing this for the very reason you mentioned.

ive seem some pricks with side lights and bright fogs on too.
complete wankers!
It's just as bad as tools who drive with a headlight out.
I would get raped for doing 80-90 on a motorway, but people with lights out dont seem to get done!
I'd say not having lights and being visible to other motorists is more dangerous than me driving fast...

and the people who think they help them see..
Erm.. no. they are there so others can see YOU!
The only time i use mine is in dense fog and more often than not i have the rear on and not the fronts, so people behind can see where the traffic is!

On the subject of fog lights.
just been following someone in a saxo, with full fogs on, blinding me!
it wasn't snowing, visibility was good.. also driving at 20mph in a 60 zone.. there was a little slush on the ground, but it was safe to do 30-40mph...
i also noted the car had a small Sax-p sticker on the boot..
so if this was you, silver vtr/s near cortonwood, CHEERS!

its only really the back fog light that annoys me...
ok its kind of silly chavies who drive with the fronts on but its no more dazzling than normal head lights i dont find.

what gets me is when there on the same side of the road as you parked up facing you with the f**king car lit up like a christmas tree!! :@
AXracing
9th January 2010, 08:47
Its the front ones that most annoy me. More so on unlit and narrow single with roads. It is mostly because there coming towards you have a much greater chance of a head on. People appear to forget that front fog lights use the same bulbs and most cars high beam. They also don't have a cutoff like a normally low beam light. So they are very dazzling. You also already have your low beams on so its a combined effect. Hence why there is this very sensible law against using them in if its not really bad fog.
Jordysport
9th January 2010, 09:25
if i am honest i have been using my front fogs basically constantly, imo it improves periferal vision dunno why but it gives a sense of security but tbh i only do it when there is no one on the road or its on single track roads.

Loads of people round here drive with fogs on all the time, so annoying.
Last night when I was driving home from work and it was chucking it down with snow, I pulled into my road which had about 5 inches on it and is like a maze of parked cars. I'm then confronted with having to drive down it basically blind as some twat had parked up, left their fogs on and gone inside a house. :wall:

It p*sses me off a fair bit, I often give people a dose of 6000k full beam if they are driving towards me with fogs on in clear weather, sometimes even broad daylight.
A few weeks ago, in a built up area, I even saw a Vectra traffic police car with front fogs on, in good clear visibility! I didn't give him any full beam, needless to say.

I don't use them unless I need too, doesn't bother me if people use them when they aren't needed.
It's people who don't dip their full beam that piss me off lol
