Stupid question but i don't have a clue!

I'm going to attempt to solve a few electrical problems in the car.

I have one of those electric reader things, where you can selct votls, amp ect.

But what setting do i put it on? and where can i connect it on the car for earth? where does the black wire go, same for the red wire?

Really confused!

Not totally sure this might be the correct section, but i feel it is general chat :).. kinda ;)

You sound pretty clueless, tbf (in the nicest possible way)

Are you sure you want to be doing electrical work when you don't know the basics??

multimeter mate

you can find some guides through google

but to be honest, if you dont understand electrics, there is no use playin with it.

its simple, voltage, obv, black earth, red what your chasing, will give you the volts.

ohms, this measure the resistance in the cabling, generally for short circuit/open circuit finding.

but you'd be better googling it and having a look around before you dive in.

because your questions seem like youve never used one, and dont understand electrics.

I know what i need to do,( check that there is power going to my window) it's just i don't know how to work the reader thing.

Have to agree tbh buddy, something are best left to the professionals.

You would have to use various different settings on the meter for testing things and if you chose the wrong one when measuring a voltage you can damage it. Unless it has overload protection.

set it to volts,

then connect it to the wires going to the window motor.

press the switch, and see if ther is any volts, if not, chase it back, so next would be to check the input to the window motor switch, make sure its not a faulty switch.

hahahahahaha JAMES! this is by far the FUNNIEST thread i have ever seen!

holy shit doode!

So black will connect to earth on my car, and then i put the red wire onto the wire/ plug that i want to test power on, select to volts, and then see if there is power going through?

basically

the window motor will have two wires going to it, as its DC, so measure it from them two wires at the motor, then measure the wiring to the switch. google it, get a bit of basics,, and you will work it out.

Not just volts it is low DC voltage.

Lmao! i think i've got my self into a bit of a pickle :P

If you want to mate i'll come up one day and you can see if you can crack it !!!!

Tbh thanks for the input/concern guys, but i think this can be closed, as, as you can see Tonto_VTR is willing to help me out ( electric nerd ) ;)

Just read through something on Google, it mentioned DC and what not, Says i should set it to 20V as i have a digital multimeter.

I will read up a bit more and attempt on the weekend.

And tonts, I will draw a penis on your car if you do.

Ifs its dc remember the symbol is a solid line above a dotted line,
______
- - - - -

Not the wave line of the multi meter will not give a proper reading, make sure the leads are connected in the right terminals on the multi meter aswell,

Multimeter is quite an easy tool to use and very useful when you do know how to use them but like said if you dont know what your doing then leave it to a pro

Thought i would update this as i think i've found the problem!

Well after hours of trying to think what it could be...... i got no where.

So i took it to the garage, and they said that theres a damaged/faulty wire on the car side of the loom.
They said that they will strip all the loom under the Dash ( the relevant loom that is ) and try and fix the problem. BUT they said this could take ages :( they hope to get it done under an hour :(, 45 quid an hour in Labour!

So it's being left to the experts to sort it out!!!!

Also they said the reason my Rear demister isn't working, is because the Relay is TRYING to work but won't :S so is it easy enough to change that myself?

What electical faults do you have...just out of interest??

Just the left electric window, and rear demister.

Are you thinking it could be the problem with the wire under the Steering wheel?

Don't think it is, as my PAS works and all 3 blowers.

UPDATE NUMBER 2 HOPEFULLY FIXED IT!

Got it back from the garage they said that the loom in the door was completly fucked, which i put in there !
So all i have to do is put a new loom in and done!!!!

Charged me 58 quid !!!!! but i suppose with out them i wouldn't know what was wrong with it!
