My mate asked me for some advice and i dont know the answer!

He has seen a good job i wont say what it is but its in the emergency services.

Here is the problem he has a good job now and is well paid the new job is better job security holiday etc etc, BUT on the application process he has to provide a refference from his CURRENT employer !!!

Does he tell his boss he is looking for another job and then if he does not get it he gets pushed out?

How can they expect anyone in employment to be able to provide this refference from there current employer i think its stupid any ideas ?

Why would his boss have a problem with him looking for another job? Does he expect all his employees to live in the same area and stay with that company all their life untill they retire?

they normally only get onto the current boss if they're thinking of giving him the job!!! he should be okay mate

come on guys in small companys they need to cover his position!
if one of the lads that worked for me was looking for another job i would have to think about replacing him
i know he cant get sacked but if he didnt get the job he will have rocked the boat it would cause friction at work to say the least ! its not like hes a burger maker at mc donalds where people come and go every day his job at mo is in good position !

I agree with a reference after he has got the job to make sure hes not been in trouble at work for stuff dodgy and that just dont see how they can expect people to give ref from current employer ?

If the guy at work asks about it he just can say that this is the career he has always wanted for himself or something similar.
Or ask them not to contact the employer.

And you'd get heavily sued, lose your job and a lot of money.

I was in same situation 7months ago applied for job, also with emergency services they asked for reference from my current employer, gave them the details etc.2weeks later my old boss pulls me in office asks if was looking for new job etc,he was acting a bit funny, but then gave me really good reference and wished me all the best etc when left on my last day and said if anything ever happend in my new job there would always be a free ramp at work for me to come back to(i used to work in audi/vw garage as service technician)
