My UK turbo 2000 to insure this year should be about £600 fully comp..

id suggest a Focus RS. it may take a little hunting around to find a decent spec on within that price but they are out there.

18 months ago a FRS popped up on passion for for 7k while we were on the look for an ST170 with a 4k budget, but it was to good a deal to pass up so i dug deep and found the money.
the cars are awesome in my opinion, very tunable, and pretty quick motors with a little fettling.
last spring on its second lap around the ring i achieved a 8:55 with it (not quite up to the standards of our escort, but still very competent)

they seem to have come down in price since i purchased that one, there are plenty out there sub 8k these days.

AlexR
16th January 2010, 21:27
Kelvin, you know a saxo with a normally aspirated 1.6 can lap the ring in sub 9 ;)

BUT focus RSs are lovely cars and in another league when it comes to build, stability and usability. Great out of the box! Should have bought one instead of my clio back in the day but meh. One of my mates has a mint mk2 escort track car, writes for a ford mag, slowly getting dragged into that scene!!!

..

Easily done if its a UK spec car, you live in a decent enough area and don't drive too many miles a year. Quotes I've been getting are far less than what i payed to insure my VTS 2 years ago.

Kelvin
16th January 2010, 22:27
yes mate, im aware of that.

i was just saying for its second ever lap, i hadnt used that car within that enviroment before.
many of the FRS boys claim to do mid 8 min laps on standard cars, which i feel is a little optomistic as i have done an 8:07 in the escort and i know how hard you have to be going to achieve this. but i know what you are saying ;)

AlexR
16th January 2010, 23:02
Totally! It's a different sort of car. I think the focus RS is actually capable of low 8s with a race driver, based on the official ford full lap time ;) Whereas a standard saxo VTS is only capable of high 8s, low 9s in same conditions...

Anyway £7500, 22 years old.

Buy a clio 172 cup for £4k and put the rest towards a house!

one of the better and more sensible comments within this whole thread :clapping:

AshKeeble
16th January 2010, 23:57
I'd keep saving tbh. Put a nice big deposit down on a house.

Cars are dead money. If you buy on for 4k you're not going to be able to sell it for 4k 6-12 months down the line, unless you spend the remaining 3.5k on modifications.

Get yourself on the property ladder, you wont regret it.

AlexR
17th January 2010, 00:05
Someone's got to be sensible! A clio 172 cup will possibly be the most fun car that you can actually use on the road, it's really cheap to buy, fuel and insure. If you buy a good one and maintain it, it won't cost a huge amount to run, and the other money can go on something sensible like furniture, luxury tvs & surround systems, holidays, gfs etc!
Every nice car i've had has been vandalised/driven into in parking lots etc and has cost me loads in depreciation. And in reality, when you stop being pretentious, a saxo vts in good nick drives just like any other car. I've driven brand new mercs, beemers, vws, audis etc in my old job, they drive no more solidly, they're just a fascade ;)

Stefan-furio
17th January 2010, 00:29
In all honesty with 7k i would buy a VTR and kit it out like crazy and also install an expensive sound system :D

172 Cups have levelled up in the market now, and they're getting rarer everyday, especially in this weather. If anything, i have noticed lately that prices are on the rise, and if anything, could make for free motoring for a year.

i had a bigger budget.. but similair nonetheless

plumped for a civic type r over a evolution 8 ... because on insurance due to me only being 19 still

civic type r's are good cars! not sure if id choose a focus RS over a type r (reliabilty/age/miles what not)

type r would be a nice choice and wont break your bank and they look good standard imo :)

dont get a cliosport ... esp high miled ones they go wrong if not maintained which more and more are like that now... in my opinon theyre the modern saxo vts lol

Having done 40k miles in a 172 Cup/182 in 16 months - id disagree with that entirely. With poor maintenance, anything goes wrong!!

The 2nd part, well around here, id say that the CTR was the local Asian chav chariot of choice, with a far worse rep than a Clio/Vts lol. Innit blud ;)

hahahahahaha... i formed a opinon after my mate's 182 that he now has had for a good while... i dont rate it, annoying little french can that can stick to type r for a good while when driven perfectly takes abit to shake them off :homme: but come duelcarriageways they dont really keep up

Where did you pull that one out of? Erm... no it won't.

If you're talking about a vRS furby then still no it won't. All the Type R driver needs to do is drop a cog and its all over. I know from experience.

And Re: Steering feel. Was it a pre-facelift EP3 or a post? The post models (04 onwards) have a revised steering feel and they do actually feel much better (albeit a tad artificially weighted at speed), with very admirable body-control. Driven them many-a-time.
