View Full Version : Why is this country still using MPH?

GrantW

As above, are we the only country still using MPH instead of KMH? If so, then why are we lagging behind?

You only prefer it because thats what we use, if you had never used MPH then you would prefer KMH lol.

Duh, you know I meant Britain.

cost to change all signs, everyones clocks would still be mph, all police equipment would need changing to read KPH..

mph is much better.

Thats like saying if we used the euro... we would prefer it..

Not really, its just a easier system, since everything is already set out in MPH in our country.
Why change it?

But other countries have changed from it, they would have needed all that done as well...

Depends how you look at the Euro. If we were born into the Euro and had always used it, then we wouldn't miss the Pound would we? Whereas because we all use the Pound then were used to it and prefer it.

Easier system? Surely it would make more sense to have everything the same, so when we go abroad we are used to the speed limits, and when foreigners come here they aren't confused either. Car manufacturers wouldn't have to make two sets of clocks, speeding equipment manufacturers wouldn't need two kinds etc etc

why does it matter?

it's hardley lagging behind as you call it

imperial measures such as pounds and ounces etc will die out sooner or later because kids arent taught that way, it's only older people that use imperial measurements, and they wont be around for ever.

intresting fact for you:

kids arent taught times tables in schools now!

and the reason were not using the euro as currency isnt because were not used to it lol!

It's just a thought thats all.

If pounds and ounces are dying out, along with inches and feet, then why not miles?

I didn't know that, suppose there's no need really since you don't even need a calculator for it, your phone can do it! But I would still think it's beneficial for kids to learn that, sharpens the brain I suppose.

True, but thats on the continent, where you can drive from country to country, we dont do that, so we dont need to bother changing it, because we cant drive to the next country where they have different rules

but what about the people who dont go abroad? what about all the people who will be around another 60+ years, Just way to big of a project to do, for no benefits what so ever.

Thats like saying why do we have our 3 prong plugs, and 240v, when europe uses 110v and 2 prong plugs..

as smith said

for all the signs in the country, imagine the cost of changing every single one of them

the way imperial measures in other ways are used are easy to change, because for example, when you buy a bad of potatoes, the labels are produced in KG as opposed to LBs now. so no major difference

Didn't see that wee edit about the Euro, obviously I know that's not the reason! Was all to do with the Pound being stronger and now look whats happened lol its pretty much equal is it not?

Good point about the plugs Smiith, never thought about that.

Edit - with the intro of the euro countries like spain and ireland have become so expensive since being under the banner of the euro currency

the £ is still a better system / currency than the euro

it's just the countries economic in general that let it down at the minute.

I agree, I wouldn't like the Euro to be brought in. But then pounds aren't really old fashioned/imperial, it wasn't too long ago it was shillings and ha'pennys lol.

mph to kmh. pounds to euro's. no thanks

Why try to change the design of the wheel?

Moral of this phrase.

If it works. leave it ;)

and as smith says. he works 1/8 inch instead of saying 2mm. its the way he was taught. any tool maker works in thousands of a mm. stick with what you know so should we

We were thinking about changing the side of the road we drive on as well. In the long run that might work out. Cheaper cars etc maybe. The initial fuck up it would cause would be unbelievable though. I think one country did it was catastrophic consequences.

We use a mixture of metric and imperial over here it's strange lol

Think of tyre number they are a right old mixture lol

255/45 R18 for example you got: Metric 255mm, A percentage 45% and Imperial 18"

I use a mixture of both when im at work 'Plant engineer' sometimes i need imperial sockets/spanner sometimes metric

And I know which is fast out of 100kph and 62mph do you! ;)

It's really not confusing at all for forigners, I drove an import with the clocks in KPH and got by fine over here.

that is the most stupidly blatent thing ive ever read.

The fact is we do have the pound and we love it becuase it makes us, us. End of tbh.

Oh, and 100km/h IS 62mp/h. :p

Thats like saying why do we have our 3 prong plugs, and 240v, when europe uses 110v and 2 prong plugs..

the reason we have 3 prong plugs is because we have an earthing system in britain. thats why we can use a higher voltage.

theres quite a few other things different about the way they wire houses etc. we've already changed the colour of the conductors for the euro colours

None of this litres per 100km shite to work out consumption.

well only if you say it to somebady who uses MPH if you said it to a frenchman for example they wouldn't think it was but if you said 300KPH they would and if you said 300kph to a brit they would think wow must of bin a veyron they were driving and its only 186mph lots of cars can do that (well not loads but a few can)

thats so true lols.

its like on top gear when JC says 160 he is actually reading it out in KPH not MPH he then sometimes says oh 160 is around 140mph!

im not really fussed what the speedo reads im to busy looking at boost, oil temp+ pressure, exhaust temp guages lols.<< not indicating I speed there im saying I dont care if its in MPH or KPH.

if im right if a car goes into its mot in the uk with pure kph clocks it wont pass its mot?

Mehhhh

I only use mm in my Joinery Workshop.

We use Inches to the nearest 1/4" and never use feet.

3.2 Metres would be 3200mm to us.. Not 125.98" lol

I use a mixture of the both. I'm training to be a pilot so use Knots and feet. I drive so use Mph and then refer to height when not flying as meters/cm's!

Driven plenty of times over here using the kmph as well with no issues. You get used to it very easily.

I can see the benefits of just having one system, but then the cost would be stupiedly high and couldnt be justified.

To make things more complicated, an American gallon is different from a British (imperial) one.
