whats the road tax on them ?

17th January 2010, 22:09
i dont think there is anything wrong with them, other than the usual wear and tear they are designed to go on and on.
i had a discovery and it was more or less faultess for the time i owned it, but sold that on for a Hilux.

Tontsy
17th January 2010, 22:10
ive read to believe its a group F, therfor 125 a year! :y:

my mate has a garage full of old landys from series 2 up to range rovers.
and he thrashes them around on adventures and town!

ive had a play in a few! and really enjoyed them!
although old to new is a big difference in how you treat it on a drive! lol.

i have upto 22k to spend on a new car.
i was looking at a clio sport, and then moving out...

but then, my mum is happy for me to stay here for a few more years aslong as i continue to pay my way!
and if i get a nice car, the dad wants to have use of it when my mum has their car! lol

so i was thinking freelander, not too shabby on fuel imo
from what ive heard well built, and reliable! possibly use for slight off roading ;) open field play ect.
insurance is affordable tbh! 1200 fully comp, 20, license 1.4 years and 0NCB drops to 600 when i come to renew! that is a brand new one!

Tontsy

petrol, is well. most things a drinker now a days for what ive been looking at!
i do believe the fuel of satan will be the way forwards sometime soon!

also rather the colour be white.

20" on low profiles

or

17" big profile fuckers and alot of mud :D

the slioo would of been track, and a very nice one with the plans i was looking at!
but not sensible in the long run or for a daily!

the insurance on the 172 was 1700...drops to 1000 next year
on this...1200 drops to 600 next year! less again if i get NCBs :D
both Fully comp!

now, bodmin moors FTW! *awaits the snow again and ill be well away :D*

its nothing special, and im not taking up many of the optional extras!

ive seen what kind of 19-20" rims are available after market routes.
so possibly change them! and lower the profile, depending on how i would decide to drive it!

im not bothered about full leather interior
or a 7" dvd sat nav screen!

its got air con
its got leccy windows

what more do i want tbh?

I can give you a perfect review on this mate. well the 1.8 version.

I picked one up on monday for my sister drove from warrington to where I live near Hull. here is my brief review (il also be doing a proper video review of the car and other cars once I get all the camera gear deliverd :D...)

1.8 petrol engine very torque and rev happy, clutch on all models are a bit of a pain so expect to sit in the freelander and stall it a couple of times (I personally had no problems but my father stalled about 11 times lols).

off road
Suspension takes a beating and handles very well with minimal body roll for such a short wheel based 4x4.newer models (2005>) where upgraded with stiffer bushes & roll bars

MPG
very good indeed roughtly 28/30 mpg.

Motorway driving
Horrible gets very boring due to the dull interior and due to the engine is rev happy your doing 70mph in 5th with 4,000 revs so all you hear is RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

gearbox
dont expect a miracle from the land rover 0-60 is about a week. moving from 1st to 2nd gear gets you no where unless you rev it hard. best gear out of the box is 4th very long and pulls hard. 5th may aswell not be present since your on the motorway at 4k revs @ 70mph hmm!

Interior
land rovers where built for low budget in mind to get you from A>B in a 4x4. very cheap plastic and you will find most the parts are inter changable throughout the landrover range and even other rover models. seats are actually comfy but doors mainly show metal Not much material used within the cabin of the landrover.

Audio/Entertainment
the sound system if set up right sounds good settings I changed it to was as follows. rear/front -1 (more sound out of rear speakers) Bass set to +2 and treable set to 0. seem to get a nice warm sound not to puntchy and can crank it up to about number 15 before it gets distorted. also to consider is in total there are 8 speakers in the land rover belive it or not lol.

Engine
Pre 2005 (old shape) are known for head gasket failure. newer models where upgraded with a thick metal head gasket. dotn be suprised if you turn the engine on and you cant tell if the engine is actually really on. I had to open the window put my head outside and rev the engine you honestly cant tell if the engine is on its really silent until your on the move and at the high end of the rev range.

Summer time
keep this in mind the land rover is like the suzuki vitara you can detatch the rear half of the roof ;)

the one my sister purchased was a late 2005 model (new shape) in black. 24,468 on the clock, FSH etc etc £5,995. very cheap for the milage and year + helps having a brother who isa petrolhead I suppose haha.

hope my review helped you out mate :D.

its great to hear peoples options / thoughts and personal reviews when looking into new motors!

i know the older models have head gasket problems!

defenders looks more manly compared to the softer front end looking freelander.

Soo nice all landrovers are :y:

Tontsy
18th January 2010, 09:48
the discoverys are frikkin awsome, and i would love one of them but your looking aroun 30k and not much less for a decent approved 2nd hand one!

the defenders are great for off roading, and will get almost anywhere, and over anything!
but are shit on fuel! and just outside my price range!

i would g old school / second hand and get something like a Series 2...
but new is what im looking for.

currently freelander have it ftw!

Why don't you test drive a private sale one? probs won't be a 09 but still 08, can't be much difference.

Mate if I did read the thread correctly you have 22K tops to spend out?

Personally if you were looking down the landy route I would 100% go for a defender 90 300tdi or a Td5 or at least give it a look. No car compares! And the free lander has a bit of a reputation with hairdressers and women :homme:

They hold value so well and you could easily pay £7-8K for a great condition, low milage, properly kitted out with diff guards, steering guards, Roof rack, spot lights, winch + bumper, spare wheel swing away (so it doesn't rip off the back door ;)) With some proper off shoes that will destroy everything.

Ever seen a car tow something off a sheet of ice? These things do it no problem and you look the dogs bullocks in doing so!

i can only look at them!
im not buying for the purpose of winching and going off road!

as it would be my daily for atleast the next 5 years! i cant see a defender doing that for me!
if i wanted another toy! then hell yes a defender 110 would be great for me!

i suggest to anyone who has never driven a defender and is suggesting getting one as a daily driver to go test drive one, they are not that good as a daily driver and the driving position is a bit odd and to the left a bit the the interior is pap, they are primarily agricultural and off road vehicles for a reason, dont expect comfort lol

Exactly !!

Me and tonto have just got back from the LandRover showroom. Some of the rangies in there omg.

The new defender looks awesome on the outside, inside - awesome from the front view, but the dashboard is literally a plastic box with bits stuck on. No way in hell a daily car for 5 years.

They do the freelander in possibly the most gorgeous colour I have ever seen, mauritous blue funnily enough. But its alot lighter and 'bluer' lol. In the sunlight it was spanking.

Tonts test drove the FreeLander SE which was amazing. The interior was perfect, exterior was stunning, engine had alot grunt etc etc.

Overall VERY nice car, but for 22k you can get ALOT from a 2nd hand car bearing in mind.

Freelanders are very nice cars, only downside to it is the petrol consumption :n: They handle like a boat at speed but that is to be expected, they are very very solid cars..

Also the space in the back is great, fold the seats down and then again it leaves enough room in the boot for 4 adults to play strip poker :y:

as mikey stated, we went for a visit to the show roooom :D
whoopa!

insurance on the model i test drove, was ABIT more than i expected! but i think it would be worth paying it, for what it was, there was alot of car!
full leather, heated seats, panoramic sunroof, arm rests on front seats, auto climate controle, dvd / sat nav, Apline Headunt with 6 CD changer, Alpine coax all round with wub woofer in Dash, didnt sound too bad tb, but im sure i could sort something out ;) cruise control, terrain response system and Parking sensors y0! which tbh i thought i would need... but i feel not as it already provides such great visibility!...the list is endless!

big bugger compared to a saxo! but so easy to drive, one you're in the driving seat, and have the mirrors all set, you feel strong on the road! i ended up in a tight lane so had to turn the thing around! and was very easy! also parked it back up in the forcourt! and the mirrors and view of the vehicle and surroundings from the driving seat was fantastic!
i have no roll what so ever in my sax, so feeling it in this was a wee bit wierd! but went well, and was taking some sweeping bends at 50-55mph and felt very comfortable with it too!

give me two minutes to bluetooth a pic and il throw it up :y:

big thanks to Mikey for picking me up, what a prick lol.

2.2 litre TD4 SE
Baltic Blue
15Months warrenty on it / till first MOT!

£22,500

as i said, being a better Trim model, with alot of extras the insurance on this model is abit more than the Basic model, with a difference of around 600 quid... hmmm... but worth it imo!

The freelander 2 is a really nice car, i work on them, they are nice to drive and perform well all round for what they are, They do have a few problems like the steering going heavy on them with requires a new resevoir a a power steering fluid flush, they have a few recalls, but overall the are one of the nicest cars iv driven, only thing better are range rovers imo

Before anyone wonders why he just did such a horrid thing...tontos message tone is..........'whatta prick'.

The salesman was talking then went silent, guess who goes and gets a message at that very moment, haha. EPIC FAIL.

He was not impressed.

And will everyone stop saying defender FTW etc....as someone, tonto and myself have stated. unless you have driven a defender everyday for years and actually found it comfy and easy then you have to remember this will be his daily car.

I hate freelanders with a passion, in a word there shit, ive worked on quite a few at work for all sorts of stuff from window regs to oil breathers, any amounts of oil leaks, brake/suspension problem's. (granted all were older than 4 years)

yeah boiii:
its a complete new engine, but ive read somehwere its a volvo lump!

22k would not get something like a defender, an audi estate and a depo on a house...one or the other yeah, but not even two of them tbh!

although 2012 does look like ill be upgrading again, eh mikey ;) new rangy ftw!

But for 22k? That would get you an 06/07 plate L332 2.5 Vogue

Vogues just a trim level. If it bothered you that much you could get a HSE badge for the back and just enjoy your twin stage heated seats, climate control, a car that heats its self up in the morning so its de-iced and warm inside before you leave the house, reversing camera, satnav, tv. I could go on.. its even got a fiber optic can-bus!

Land rover and Range rover are the same thing just rangerover is a bit more premium.

Tontsy

Lol when the bloke knew the ammount I wanted to spend he did point out he has a rangey for the same price! But running costs on them are dreadfull! They eat tyres and mph is shiters!

I live in the middle of a city, a defender wouldn't be worth its weight in gold! And non benificial if I got one but I love the 110
