View Full Version : How many miles can you get out of a full tank in a VTR on average?

I finally passed my driving test on Monday and will hopefully be getting a VTR on Saturday.

It will be my first car for around 8 years so have no idea how much petrol Im going to go through and how much it will cost me. Obviously it depends how much Im going to drive it but to put it into perspective, how many miles can I expect on a tank and how much to fill the tank on a VTR?

Im talking on average here, with say a mixture of town driving and probably a decent amount of hammering it down country roads.

Also how much would you say you spent a week on petrol for your VTR?

Thanks

Danny

depends on how you drive it tbh drive in higher gears with low revs you will save fuel you should get alot of miles but a find when its cold ( like today ) it uses more fuel

I spend bout 100 quid a week on petrol in mine but i do alot of driving, its normaly quite good with fuel intil you put your foot down rev needle goes up fuel needle goes down it all depends on how you drive

i got 450miles once, that was a lot of motorway miles doing 50mph tho, averaged out at just over 10p a mile, i get no where near that driving around the city tho obviously usually a tenner will get me about 60 miles which is closer to 20p a mile

I average about 150 miles to £20 but mine is normally town driving with short journeys.

Your keeping it for 8 years? How old is it now? If MK1 it will be a pile of rust in 8 years.

£100 a week, damn. how many miles do you do on average?

450 miles sounds good, Im sure thats not the norm though.

20p a mile doesnt sound too bad.

how much to fill the tank?

All depends on fuel prices, around £40-45

i was gonna say i think people are getting the wrong end of the stick lol and yea i got 450 miles but that was all motorway where u use less fuel and i was constantly in the slow lane (work gave me a set amount of fuel money and i wasnt allowed to go over it so i was driving very slow lol)

mines a vtr it's cost me £40.65 to fill the tank iv used just under a quarter of a tank in a week and its done about 66miles so far so will see. the full tank will at least last me about 3weeks, i hardly drive anywhere my boy.f loves driving so i just let him but his zetec-s drinks through petrol.

you say that but my mk1 saxo is 12 years old no rust... and i even checked under the boot floor which everyone paints to keep the rust away and there was no rust under there, im pretty sure in 8 yrs when its 20 years old it'll still have a decent shell, ive had 3 fords dont get me started on rust on them lol

lol ok, I read on pistonheads that someone got 330 miles and still had 1/4 tank left, just wanted to see if that was right.

no idea how many miles Ill be doing a week, think 200 is the average (ish) @ say 15p a mile tha would be £30 a week, doubt Ill be doing that every week though, maybe for the first few weeks then probably less on average, cant be sure though.

I remember my mate saying years ago that this guy in the town I lived in had an impreza turbo, said he went through £100 a week in petrol, guy thinking that was alot, pal said he went throught that in a day lol. Thats probably driving day and night though in a 2L turbo, he had a celica gt4 at the time.

going to work out pretty expensive this new car lol £107 a month insurance, even if I only go through £20 a week in petrol, thats nearly £200 a month worse off than I am now lol oh well, sure it will be worth it lol

Since I've got the new VTR I've been driving pretty conservatively, managed around 450-500 on a tank. But that's been biddy speed, literally.

wow, £100 a week? thats mad!
I can get just under 300 miles out of £30, mines a westie though bit different but wouldnt think a vtr would be much lower if your driving it economically.

I thought thats what you meant at first. Then I thought why would you have owned a car before if youv'e just passed your test? Only just thought that maybe you was banned before.

66 miles with just under 1/4, works out around 300 miles a tank ish for £40 so around 13p a mile, not bad.

Ive got a heavy foot to put it mildly but am going to try to be as sensible as possible lol where theres likely to be speed cameras anyway, no way in hell Im going through the hassle of re sitting my test again now within 2 years.

1ntense
4th February 2010, 00:54
my previous car was when I was young and not quite as sensible lol, ie didnt have a license.

That was when I was around 20, was a cavalier gsi, drove it from here (northamptonshire) to a town in scotland just under 500 miles away on about £40-45 if I remember correctly, so Im guessing if I was to do the same, driving in the same way in a VTR, that £40-45 would have took me maybe 300, just guessing now but petrol doesnt sound as if it costs that much more than when I had my cavy.

people are always going on about how much petrol costs and while it is shocking when you think how much is tax and how much it cost in the US etc but it could be worst.

Ill probably be one of those people moaning about petrol costs in a few weeks though lol

yea ive had 2 fiestas; a 2000 mk5 zsr and the arches were bubbling on that, my xr2i was riddled with rust everywhere and i had an escort which i picked up for £35 was gonna fix it up until we finally dragged it out the hedge where it had been sat in for years and i just pulled most of the arch away so i sold it to a scrappy for £70 :D lol

385 motorway miles is my best so far and that wasnt exactly going 50mph ;)

but seriously though even when i boot it alot i would still get just over 60 mile a tenner.

Time to do a service on your car Jeff lol

yes the sills :y:. Ford are renound for rust there . My boy.f had an escort but his seemed to be fine just the rear arches seemed to be rusting and the lip on the arch that curls under started bending out by the rusting.

4th February 2010, 09:27
8 years? Doubt it mate! Good luck though :D

On an average £45 tank, I only get about 300 miles. Thats a mixture of short journeys, urban motoring and to work and back (18miles, there and back).

If you put your foot down alot, say bye bye to your petrol and hello to your petrol light!

use to get 400 miles to a tank. given the car abuse didn't really effect it. I miss my vtr :n:

Lawz
4th February 2010, 11:10
Bit smaller but most I've had out my 1.1 was 450 ish from a full tank, almost all motorway and it wasn't going slow.

Always though 1.4/VTR could manage better with a more powerful engine hence less revs needed, although obviously larger cyclinder capacity

seriously lightly footed that is! My LAMBDA sensor loom has torn off though which explains it. I didnt think it was that bad untill my mate told me his VTS gets him to work and back for 3 days on £35 where mine costs £15 a day.

If i got anything less than 400 miles to a tank in my vtr regardless of how i was driving it then i had it up on ramps cos something was wrong.

I regularly was getting 420/440 miles and my record was 472 before i bottled it and topped up again

for the price of a lambda you'd save yourself on the extra fuel you're paying within a couple of weeks.

Its not even the price of the lambda as its still in the manifold! Just the wires need soldering! I hardly use it at the moment. Only way i found out my Miles was from taking my mate to work while his cars in the garage for a while. Im having his old engine too, so going to sort things out then :)

i got around that aswell with the same car, maybe nearer the 500 mile mark.

but my record in Y221 LKU was 524.4 miles that was filled untill the first click. that was on £45 (about 42.5 litres) i kept a gallon in the back and kept going till i ran out of fuel. i lasted about 40 miles with the light on!! i was amazed.

lol yea it really needs a good service the engine bay is splattered in oil, hopefully sparco_tom is coming over to mine to fit my rallye head and inlet and at the same time im having the cambelt tensioner and waterpump with a new oil filter and plugs, the service alone should put a couple more ponies back in the engine lol
