is it a good idea to buy a 2nd hand laptop? Or is it pointless and i should just save up for a brand new one?

Depends on the spec and the price.

I can't see any problem with it, Aslong as its a good spec and the price is right you should be fine.
The only problems you tend to get wih laptops after a while is the batterys start to last alot less than when they where new but there not exactly expensive.
But at the end of the day it depends what you need it for if you just need it for the internet, music etc buy it new you can get ones with 3GB ram & 150GB hard drive for little over £300, And if you buy new you get warrenty etc which would be very handy if it f***s up !
If you need one for gaming, music production etc buy one with a decent spec second hand or build it yourself (Or get a mate to do it) Otherwise it will cost you a fortune.
