Suggestions please.

After the summer, ill be buying a house/moving in with the missus, & moving 40 miles away from work.

If i can find somewhere to keep the saxo, ill obviously keep it, get rid of the thristy golf & buy a cheapo 330i Sport to pile the miles on ...

My problem is, if i cant keep the saxo, what car for £6k would give me driving pleasure, get to 30-35 mpg on the mway (80 mile commute) and be suitable for track days as well :panic:

Im currently thinking a Leon Cupra R with remap, FMIC & coilovers.

Any other suggestions? No Jap crap btw.

bmw 320d with remap, 50mpg, lovely balanced handling and not slow when kept in torque range ;)

No diesels :p

They're simply not suitable for track, & are a complete money pit when they do go wrong, which after a track day, they do. Been there, done that lol.

Good Luck.

Yeah, just a few lol.

Jap Crap reasoning - i'd happily have an Evo 7/8 or Scooby Sti, but fuel economy is abysmal!! Vtec isnt something that does it for me, the CTR steering feel is non-existant and the ITR/ATR is a bit old these days, brilliant cars though!!

I do love them, especially with the mountune package, but i m not sure i would buy one over a 1*2 if i was looking for another small car ...

Diesel. I know you said you don't want a diesel but these have proven quite capable on track, return upto 60mpg and have generic engine parts from throughout the VAG range so cheap spurious parts are readily available

Weak turbos, need to put in a vxr turbo on those, very common issue,

Doesn't the Leon Cupra R already have a FMIC? The 20v Turbo is a great engine as your Mrs will know!

I'd save a little more and get a mk2 Leon FR (Golf GTi Engine). These stage one map to 260BHP. You could spend more money and go Stage 2 300BHP+ The k1 kit is teh shex!!

My mate had a ibiza fr diesel, remapped to 182bhp atw and 345lbs of torque. used to smoke my mates 350ish bhp evo5 upto 100mph, he told me when driving on the motorway he got around 50mpg

I had a 200BHP ibiza Cupra Diesel it was quite a weapon! It stayed completely parallel with a modified EP3 Civic Type R on the quarter mile.

I'd imagine the smoke coming out of a 200bhp diesel would be like this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8AQpAJo5tk

And I would expect the Ibiza to win against an EP3 because they have much more torque so staying parallel is a bit disappointing.

I have a 200BHP diesel and she doesnt smoke at all ;)

I fucking hate the way americans love smoke like that and can get away with it when here we are in the UK paying stupid amounts of road tax on a 2ltr petrol!

mardon
17th February 2010, 13:43
Only lots of smoke if its a bad map chucking loads of un-needed fuel. My mapped diesel chucked out hardly any smoke. Really don’t know why people hate diesel. You should try it, the powerband is far more accessible for day to day driving.

Sorry I meant EP3 (old shape not the new FN2 shape, got titles mixed up) and it was modified with exhaust, induction and I think k-pro. It also pulled away from ST focus’s but he was closing the gap toward the end of the quarter strip.

My mate had a FN2 and I pulled away from that when my car was standard (170BHP on the rollers). I wouldn’t write off a VAG diesel as a track car.

FYI.

I used to own a mapped 206 hdi, i took it to the ring & f*cked it by driving it hard. New clutch, turbo, injectors, high/low pressure fuel pumps & injector rail. Not going there again thank you very much. Mate at work has a mapped 330d, a briliant drive that had just cost him over £2k in turbo & a few other bits and bobs.

Derv = false economy imho. I've done 160k in the past 4 years, the cheapest car to run out of the lot, a 328i Sport.

Petrol :y:
Diesel :n:

It upsets me that people can consider a car that revs to a max of 5k rpm a track car :panic:

As it happens, i'm going to look at an M3 Evo tomorrow ;)

mardon
17th February 2010, 14:14
Peugeot HDi.. thats where you went wrong :)

The HUGE amount of torque more than makes up for the rev range. You just dont drive the car the same. But you know what your after so fair play.

TBF the Ibiza Cupra handled CRAP compared to my 106 Gti!

I vote VAG! Go for a leon!

I do agree to some extent, although i drive my derv pretty hard and she hasnt missed a beat yet (touch wood) luckily the garage before i bought it had a new turbo and egr etc fitted before i bought it, wouldnt fancy having that cost thrown at me. The only reason i have one is the amount of miles i do, done 13k in it since august :(

Not to mention the le mans winning audi r10 tdi ;) bit of a difference i know but it shows diesels can be used on track successfully.

Which teams run diesels now? I knew SEAT did a while ago, wasn't aware any more had but I don't follow it too much, just didn't think SEAT did too well running the diesels did they?

I'd personally say the EP3 will tick all those boxes. Including the Jap crap box which isnt a good thing for yourself.

Maybe a few engine alterations can change the engine characteristics to suit you?

if your going diesiel go reno megane 1.9 tdci. mate gets 60mpg outta it. hes had something done to it as it goes like shit of a shovel. tbh tho i think hes uprated the turbo system. he has a 2" backbox on it and supprisnly enough it sounds alright. i thought itll sound like a tractor :)

E39 M5, now down as low as £6k. Obviously it will be a completely cunted example at that price but c'mon, it's an M5 :)

Back in the real world, how about a Mazda MX5 Sport? Does all that you ask and has brilliant handling for track work, will be super cheap to run and £6k should grab something pretty perfect.

An E46 330ci is in budget, as you know they're awesome but not the track toy the E36 was.

Being that you're not that tall, a Porsche 944? That said, even the Boxster is getting near those prices now and would be a better DD
