The megane has gone tonight.

http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll296/bluerudeboy/Winter%20Clean/IMG_2882.jpg

This now means i am carless. So im looking for a new one, im wanting somethings that cheap to buy and run but that is still a 'nice' car.

I ideally want to spend 2-3k but can raise this if needed. I had my eye on a nice Leon Cupra 150 diesel but this has been sold and there are not many about not that are under 5k.

Any ideas?
needs to be near Wakefield
*currently scanning the trader mag ive bought*

So how come you sold the megane?

And if i was looking for affordability i would definately still be looking at french and it would be renault ;)

Clio 172 / 182 tickle your pickle? great little cars and cant seem to fault mine other than she munched a CV joint the other weekend but it had been knocking for months and it was my own fault because i kept putting off replacing it lol.

Same colour and year as mine but mines immaculate and completely OEM+

Matt

Been made redundant in another 5 months so decided that i wouyld try save some extra cash just incase i don't walk straight into another job. I like the clio's and there is a FF 172 up for 2980 near me but not sure if a clio is big enough. Its had one owner from new, just had belts and water pump done, but the mpg will only be 34 which isnt much more than i was getting in the meg. still undecided on them atm

there are these two (not my postcode)

I find i get alot more MPG if i dont boot the clio at all, Get about the same as the saxo tbh 100 miles to a tenner. Only thing i will say that lets it down for me, is the throttle response but im used to cable throttle, not fly by wire!

Brilliant little cars and especially if you can find a looked after example which has already had teh belts done! because i bought mine without it and it cost me little under 1k when the misses redlined it showing off to her friends and snapped the idler pulley! still doesnt sound quite right to me now but renault gave it the all clear and it performs better than before :)

Matt

what MPG do you get? was speaking to Tupps (old member) and he said he gets 34 from mixed driving

Matts-VTR
20th February 2010, 01:39
My style of driving=

Drive gently barely even 1/4 throttle upto about 2.9-3.2k before changing gear (and i ALWAYS let the car warm up from cold for at least a few minutes before driving it at all) the car sits nice and sweetly at around 3k @ 60mph in 5th which is plenty for me.

If some BMW driving asshole sits on my bumper for 3 miles missing every perfect opportunity to overtake me but still sits ON my rear bumper with his fog lights on then i show him how a REAL engine performs when driven properly, and i never go more than 450rpm past the shift light on the very very very rare occasion that i do clear the pipes.

And like i said driving normally like this everyday i get about 100 miles to £10 of petrol @ £1.11.9 of 98 ron from my local garage (the ONLY local garage that sells 98 :( and i only run it on that because the nearest Vpower pump is 35 miles away!)

Hope this helps
Matt

Mark51
20th February 2010, 01:51
that works out to be 50.51mpg? yet Auto Trader says 25.2mpg.

Matts-VTR
20th February 2010, 01:58
Must just be my incredibly light foot as i very very rarely boot it ever.

My old N reg 1.2 clio once made 199.1 miles on the red light.

And yes im very well renowned for driving like a grandad :D

Matt

*edit* Just been outside to look at the trip computer and my last journey was just over 11 miles and i averaged a smidge over 42mpg.

Mark51
20th February 2010, 02:02
42 would be heaven as i was getting 24 on the 225 lol

Mark51
20th February 2010, 02:05
what are the servicing costs like Matt? service intervals? etc....

Matts-VTR
20th February 2010, 02:06
I think its only that low because im in wales and im forever driving over hills so the engine is struggling abit.

On a decent flat run into england for the cinema or something (60 miles round trip) i usually use little over 1/8th of a tank which seems to equate to just over a fivers worth.

I find a car with more power is alot better for fuel efficiency aslong as its not turbo'd or uprated as it doesnt struggle / need as much throttle as a smaller engine with less power, i can quite happily coast to places in the 172 in 4th / 5th that the VTR would have to be flat out in 3rd to keep up and would be using twice the fuel!

Matt

Mark51
20th February 2010, 02:09
^^ lol, that was my logic when i bought the Megane. Bigger engine will need less hammer to get to the speed i want. now i got the speed i wanted but ALOT quicker and then just kept going lol

Matts-VTR

Servicing costs arent bad considering,

Well after the misses snapped the idler pulley and nearly bent all my lovely valves (yep you guesed it she dont drive that car anymore!) i had a very lucky escape, it just smashed all the bottom pulley cover and the cambelt slipped one tooth and didnt affect the timing to badly or bend a single valve!

That little mishap cost £750 to fix.
New backbox: £125
Silver Service (needed every 14k miles i believe and does the oil, filter, fuel filter and A/C system and cooling system) : £125

But those prices are from the main renault dealer and they have always ripped people off.

If the work had been done at a local garage i would of expected the bill to be considerably less!

BTW mine is a 2002 monaco blue 172 covered 54k from new with FRSH and just had both belts done @ 53k.

And i love every second of owning her :D absolute fucking pleasure to drive its *nearly* as good as sex! :fcuk:

Good cars but they feel underpowere as i had a 1.2 sxi and wanted an upgrade but after driving a 1.8 it just didnt justify the insurance hike!

So i settled for a 172.

And i did say NEARLY as good as sex :P

Yes actually and having had 2 BMW's to compare it too helps :y:

And for the record a lightweight 172 2.0 16v 4 pot engine which is much more rev happy than a beemer 2.0 heavy straight 6, will show any 320i how to do it.

Might also be worth adding that it likes to show 325i's how its really done occasionally too.

Totally disagree with this...

You do not approve of the new 335 engines then? 3.0 twin turbo that gives the new m3 a run for its money?!

The new 320d engine? 58 mpg, 0-60 in 7 ish seconds, 20,000 mile service intervals and bugger all carbon emmisions, are renault/citroen currently doing any engine that come close to that?
