I was going to say why didnt he take it out of gear, but after reading it, it was jammed in gear, surely he could have shut it down by taking the key out?

But then again when your in such a pannick maybe you wouldnt think about doing that?

yea thats what i did when my pedal got stuck.......but what locks up when u take your key out of the ignition? ya steering! so bugger that at that speed

either way if ya keys in the ignition but no electrics on the steering will still lock up - would u risk that at 100+ mph?

Take the key out on a long straight bit of the motorway, on the hard shoulder of course & get a cop car infront of you, get him upto the right speed, then the copper slows down a wee bit so the cars touch bumpers then the copper puts his brakes on slowly for both cars, if he were to keep the key in the ignition without ticking over the car then he would have had some sort of steering.
