how do i adjust the brake pedal so its a bit more responsive on the brakes? is it anything to do with the rod under the bonnet inline with the steering wheel covered by the black case?

can take the play out of the pedal by tightening the 2x 13nuts.
But don't over tighten them as your brakes will bind

if you have some 'free play' in your pedal then you want to move both 13mm nuts to the right in your picture.
If the brakes are binding a little, then move them left a little

ok which one is the locking nut? im guessin on the left. i have some free play in that rod and was told to tighten it up and is it true that it should make the brakes a bit better?

ok but i feel i really have to push right to the bottom to get the car to stop if it is adjusted i wont have to stamp so hard will i and surly they will work better because i will have more brake pedal distance

bleed them first then do this. Mine had about 2mm of play in the rod and i think its multiplied in the pedal as after adjusting it the feel is miles better!
