A mate of mine got a VW Polo 6N2 1.4 8v last night in white, slammed with Rota Cups on.. it does look mint. It has got me thinking now of selling my VTR and getting one.. does anyone know what the 1.4 16v's are like or the GTi's ?

The 6n2 16v's are pretty slow. Think the 6n 16v's are about the same as a phase 1 vtr. I'd get a 6n as their quicker and look better.

TBH the 6n valvers are overpriced in terms of purchasing and insurance plus im pretty sure they are slower than the later VTRs. Not worth it imo.

lol, I wouldn't say 'fucking rapid', but they're nippy enough, as said, a 6N is about on par with a VTR.

had a W plate 1.6 16V and it was spot on but had an appetite for gearboxes!

The Gti is a decent little motor, shares it's engine with the Lupo Gti - 125bhp.
Xenons are standard as is aircon. Good spec level and you can probably pick one up now for a lot less than £3000.
Generally reliable but notoriously bad gearbox and very prone to fail. One of the reasons the Lupo has a 6-speed box as opposed to the Polo's 5 speed. If you can get one that's had it done all the better.
I'd recommend the Gti, I get around 40mpg around town and it's reasonably quick for what it is - around 8.5secs to 60mph.

Not mega set on the looks but the performance looks pretty tasty.
The new Gti has been clocked at 6.9secs to 60mph with the DSG box. That's the 180ps engine (1.4TSI).
Good bit of kit but whether I'd pay £18000 brand new is another matter.

The valvers are meant to be 100bhp from their little 1.4 which is pretty impressive.
The biggest advantage to the 6n2 however is the galvanised body.
Out of all the 6n2s i think i'd go for the top 1.9 TDI as i think it was the 130pd engine from the Golf,oh the possibilities with that engine in a Polo.
