With the brake travel taking further to move before the brakes become effective indicates that the master cylinder seals may be on their way out. However with the clunking sound, examine the caliper retaining bolts for security also the brake caliper carriage bolts (the ones with the Allen key recesses).
The clunking could also be the CV joint worn.
