Driveshaft knocking, and can move from side to side

Right guys, i heard a knocking noise coming from the front drivers side of my 106 gti, so got the car on the ramp and have found my drivers side driveshaft you can move side to side and the passenger side is solid, now i am sold there is a 'c' clip or something that could have broken, anybody know???

I am replacing a drivers side drive shaft on a saxo VTS on Sat, can't say I know what a C clip is but there is an intermediate bearing that the drive shaft goes through before entering the transmission. The bearing assists in holding the drive shaft in with 2 off-set bolts. If the bearing is knacked you should be able to replace it ( I think ), its been a while since i've done 1. Also if you end up replacing the drive shaft get a new oil seal at the same time.

The shaft is designed to move side to side so it can vary it lengh depending on the position of the suspension.
