Looking at getting an alarm and fitting it myself. See that halfords has one for £30, what does everyone think? Any recommendations?
I just need basics.

I was asked by a customer to fit his alarm the same as one your looking at
i was not right happy but agreed
fitted alarm wired in closed car and pressed button
Nothing
checked wiring all ok power earth etc still Nothing
so he had to take alarm back to be replaced that was 1 month ago still waiting for it to come from another branch
and he was not happy that i charged him for fitting it and wanted money to refit after he got his new one
But that was not my fault i still fitted it and did my job
Go for a supply and fit that way if there is a problem myself or the fitter will have a spare in the van and swop it
then they can return to suppliers for replacement that is the difference

So, in that case, any recommendations on self install car alarms that aren't a rip off or overpriced?

if you stick to brands that you have seen or heard of then you should be ok. Brands like codra, meta, sigma, toad, lazerline, gemini are all very good alarms that would be easy to fit as long as you know what you are doing.

Thanks for that reevesy,
Any suggestions on places to buy? And for a novice car modder, would you suggest doing a DIY job or getting someone else to do it?

makes me laugh how people spend alot of money modifying cars and then skimp on the alarm....one of the parts that actually keeps the car secure.

I agree, but there is a difference in skimping and being a smart shopper ;)

I agree with both dont do short cuts on Security
I look at it this way
would you have a Goodmans stereo in your car for £30 cos it was cheap and had lots of gismos
Or would you go for Sony Panasonic Kenwood etc
prob not i would not so price your alarm with your ICE
Also dont get me wrong davidb2002
shopping around is the way to go as long as you use brands known to man

totally agree. Needless to say, i don't have ICE to worry about. I bought it cause I needed a CD player with a bit of EQ. Im not a mad teenager who needs alot of boom.
Just read the guide to alarms and its given me alot of info. A CAT 2-1 might be good. Easy to DIY?

All i would say is you can get a good alarm installed by Mr_toad at a reasonable price and all his work and the product is guaranteed.
If you fit it yourself you dont have a guarantee as you arent a licensed fitter.....and also you dont get a certificate to show you insurance company.

Dont get me wrong but that hawk alarm looks like all the cheap jap crap that is on ebay. Yes they work but for how long and how good are they for reliability???? do they last as long as the car? The products that me and ian fit Will And Do last as long as they are on the cars and if not we can fix them with available parts.
