power-steering pump problem

it makes a wineing noise when first start the car and its somtimes steering really heavy then suddenly goes really light is there anything i can do or is it a new pump ?

Whack it with a massive hammer, but it is on its way out, keep an eye out for one in the for sale section

hit it on the side as you looj at it from passanger side but make sure car is running
