Going on a fairly long drive to skegness.. Pre journey checks?

Alrite everyone.. As title, Im going to skegness in about 2 weeks for a little break. Should take me about 3.5 hours from Birmingham. Im driving up in the VTR and wondered if theres any tips you can give me as in, What to check before hitting the motor way.

Im aware of the obvious - Make sure the Spare is inflated, Oil, Water etc... Anything else ? or is there anything i should make sure i take with me Incase Of Emergency?
Edit.. This will be a daytime Drive BTW.

Is the jack in the car incase you need to change the wheel?

Make sure oil & coolant levels are fine, also windscreen washer fluid. Check your tyres aswell tread and pressure

As for stuff to take with you, you're not driving across the Sahara Desert so it's not as if you need a survival pack. Just take plenty fags, a case of beers for the long drive, and a decent sized rucksack full of mind altering hallucinagenics

The mushrooms and LSD is packed and ready haha jokes... On a serious note, Yeah ill check over the oil, brake, coolant levels and tyre pressures, wheel bolts and what not. Oh and the jack yeah.. I dont think thats in there.

Then one of your tyres pops, and you're stood there wondering how you're gonna get the spare on!

Wheel brace aswell might be handy unless your wheel nuts are just hand tight. Hand tight is perfect for a long journey by the way it's easier to have them like that incase you do need to change a wheel :) Have a nice trip

Without sounding like a prick, why don't you know what checks to make? I passed my test 5 years ago (I'm 22) and you were taught what items to check by your driving instructor - it's actually part of your test.

Honest opinion is - it's common sense checks like this and makes you wonder if people should be on the road if they don't know.

Take a major first aid pack. A Years supply worth of food, some snow chains, and everything in case you get stuck on the side of the road.

give the bonnet catch a lacquering with WD40 - some have been known to fail = dire consequences at +70 mph.

You, it's good for keeping up energy if you get stuck, it takes ages to go off, easy to store, and won't taste any different if you keep it in the boot, and it's cheap and easy to open.

Other than that, just check oil, water, tyre pressures, and make sure your wheel nuts are on tight enough. Unless your car has any other problems you know of, then I wouldn't bother with owt else.

It is all general stuff that you should learn whilst learning how to drive.

Make sure you have directions and fuel :y:

He's probably making sure he hasn't forgotten anything, rather than he hasnt got a clue what to check.

Personally I would inflate my tyres a bit more on the motorway if you have luggage etc and also to get a bit more MPG because you don't really need cornering ability on the Mway.

As was obvious, I know the main points im not bloody stupid, Ive just never been too far in the saxo n wondered if there was anything of use as some of you have probably done long trips...Ill do as mentioned though definately. Thanks to all those who commented.

Isn't that far of a drive. Check the normal things like spare tyre and oil then leave. If anything does start to go wrong, give it a whack.

Common sense and breakdown cover will do matey, also warm coats incase you do break down as you don't wanna be sat on the motorway in your car

haha, made me chuckle, but yeah I knew what you meant. Its not possible for a thread to go without one smart ass comment. But yes if you havent got breakdown cover then I'd reccomend it, just piece of mind more than anything.

Just general checks like brakes and tyres and make sure your coolant and everything is topped up :y:
