Not personally, if the person looks genuine, got loads of history and receipts for parts then it wouldn't put me off.

like raunchz says, as long as there good paper history/service's etc you shouldnt have a problem. you say theres a lot of high mileage ones about... theres a few low mileage ones as well if you look hard enough. depends waht your looking to buy and price range though

My saxo has 119k on the clock. Had engine rebuilt and fsh, mostly from main dealer.
Didnt put me off.

I bought mine on 115k. Runs sweet as, 6k miles on; no trouble whatsoever.

Was clearly the pride & joy of the bloke I bought it off. So I don't think mileage is that big an issue if the car's looked after.

I bought mine on 110k now on 127ish and going strong. My last saxo was on 96k when i got it and it died on me a year later with 127/8k.

Theyre fine tbh. Just check the chassis is ok, everything else if needs be can be sorted cheaply.

When I buy a car I search for less than 60k, wouldn't touch one with more than 80k

I brought my VTS on 51k and its now on 65k after a year and a bit driving. However had engine rebuild serviced loads. With FCSH. runs like a dream.. Hopefully replace the pistons cams and have a full on whore of the engine this summer.. Just looked after it miles mean nothing my friend is on 60k and runs like a sack of shit the oil looks like marmite

I did in my first year lol.

My mate got his VTS on 130k and runs well too.

Few poeple got them on 160k. Some proper bargains about that are better than cars with 40k.

A car at 40k costing 3k can have more problems than one at 140k costing £400

I'd rather be the person to put the mileage on a car, depends if resale bothers you or not. For example, if you buy a car with over 100k on it, then try selling it with say 160k, I cant imagine many people would be interested. Obviously price/budget is key, but i'd always try and find the lowest mileage, genuine/tidy example your budget can stretch to.

Ive seen soo many low mileage cars over the last few weeks that are in crap condition, IMHO mileage means nothing, it all depends who has owned the car and how its has been looked after.

canaryvtr
6th April 2010, 18:12
yes depends how its look after totally agree but i was v lucky with my 15000 which is now a 64000,
got mates with high miliage cars which run like beautys n cause them no trouble n other mates with low millage new cars that give them all the problems they possibly could!

not quite bought with over 100k but i got mine at 94k, and its done just over 12,000 miles since i got it still looks immaculate inside and out.
if the previous owners have looked after it and have serviced it etc high mileage shouldnt be a problem in my eyes

i brought my 306 on 98thousand miles and the seller was a very nice man and they lived in a nice house and seemed honest about everything and it had fsh and loads of receipts and stuff :)

rey
6th April 2010, 18:45
Depends how its been looked after tbh. For example, my dad's 406 is on 237000 miles, and it drives far better than my company pool car (406) which is on 112000 miles.

He's done pretty much every single mile, other than when me and my brothers have borrowed it, and us driving it probably amounts to about 2000 miles lol.

mileage doesnt put me off, i just look for the lowest mileage for your money, a less risk of problems that way, so if i had about £1500 for vtr, i look for one with about 50k-60k, about the best you going to get for the money, but it all depends on how much money you got

Hahaha, no.

Mileage is a very false economy when looking at cars. They aren't built to break you know? Sure they need maintenance like everything else, so you look for something that has been well maintained. Mileage isn't really something you should be concerned about, what's happened through all the mileage is what you should be concerned about.

I bought mine with 37k on the clock full citroen service history and immaculate condition. I've had it for 3 years and it's now on 82k and still runs like it has 37k on the clock - regular services, oil changes every 2k miles and loads of TLC. As long as it's well looked after then for me mileage isn't a problem

Depends how its been used in the past.
if its had a stop start stop start journey all its life, then its obviously gonna nack the engine.

my dad once bought an escort (wooo :P) with 30,000 genine miless, and the engine was fcukd :D

Well my 106 gti is on 111,000 miles now and is still on original engine, gearbox and rear axle. Never had headgasket or that done either serviced by myself every 3 months and just been rollin roaded at 141bhp and 120lbf.ft so its obviuosly still got plenty life left in her yet!
Mileage is just a number at the end of the day. Buy a low mileage car and you will end up spending money on things breaking buy high mileage and they will already have been replaced.

its just how people have looked after the car

i got a 106 gti last summer on 78k for 1800 good condition and all that within a month had spent over a grand fixing it. Got a vts a couple of months ago with 110k for 600 quid and an old fiesta runaround came with a folder full of history hasnt missed a beat only problem ive had is a puncture! Mileage aint an issue as long as its been looked after.

My 1st 106 was on 178000 before the big ends went.. Safe to say i killed the engine.

my mango is on 122k, just needs a new 'box, new exhaust (that isn't desperate, had the wrong box on so it mullers the rubbers!), and the HG and cambelt maybe in the next few months. few spots of rust, nothing major

the vtr is on 112k, runs fantastically but exterior is dog ;)

Mines was on over 100k, no service history or any history of any kind.
When I bought it, it had clearly never really been looked after, but it was still very quick and ran faultlessly.
I've worked for a main dealer for 10 years and am a diagnostic tech and, I know people will disagree but I personally think service history isn't anywhere near as important as everyone seems to think, and even if its got one they aren't always genuine.
If you have no history on a high miler but it seems to run well, quietly and smokless, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, just stick a cam belt on it and change the oil and plugs once you get it
Used cars will always be very hit or miss and unfortunatly impossible to tell a good from a bad.

Same with me, my saxo has no service history, its on 104k miles, albeit the engine is on about 80k, but no proof it's been swapped.

I had a Vectra on 123k with no history, ran very well...

History is good because you can see what's been done with the car, but if the car drives well, then yeah, you change the belt, oil, plugs, filters, and away you go.

Mines on 128K at the moment.

No service history (As far as I'm aware) Had two lady owners in the past (Mature ones)

P REG.

Utterly looked after. Not a spot of rust on the car, arches etc are all clean.

Just replaced exhaust, whole section. New Head, Camshaft, Valves, Rocker Assembly, Springs, Stem Seals. Not due to them being dodgy, rather looking after the car.

Pressure testing showed no signs of any fatigue or issues on the bottom end, no raised compression when wet compression testing so seals all good. Next stage is bottom end rebuild and re-conditioned gearbox.

I hope to, and plan to have my Saxo for at least another 5+ years. Going to strip it over the summer and get the bottom, arches blasted and repainted just for extra piece of mind :)

Cars are like anything else- they get worn out. Stupid things like the clutch and that are a lot more likely to need replacing the higher the mileage.
