Probably best bet is to whack a new engine in.

Probably bent some valves. Did you try starting it back up once it cut out?

x_steph_vts_x
7th April 2010, 23:48
Yes and i no i shudnt off coz it makes it worse my dad says its bent all 16 valves !!
I would get an engine but who to fit it ?? Its a big job

mardiGRANT
7th April 2010, 23:50
If the cam belts snapped as above youve most likely bent some valves, its basically pricey either way you go, its either head off and have it sent away to have new valves etc replaced or new engine.

x_steph_vts_x
7th April 2010, 23:54
Me dad reckons i need a new head and cambelt and it SHOULD be alriight ... He reckons all 16 valves r bent :(

How much do you think it would be ??

rey
7th April 2010, 23:56
If I remember right, I think you can get a 16v head for around £150, not too sure tbh.

mardiGRANT
7th April 2010, 23:58
Has he had the head off? It depends where you take it really.

Swapping a VTS engine with another VTS engine from same year is a pretty easy job.

mardiGRANT

Y Reg ... 2001 I Think

Paul
8th April 2010, 00:09
Yeah Y reg is 2001.

Shame, my brothers got a spare 'older-version' engine in the garage that he could of sold you. Will be easier for you to buy a newer 3 plug engine though.

The head would work fine though surely Paul?

out of interest, how many miles on the clock and had the cam belt been replaced at any point

Paul

Doubt he would split the engine though :P

Liam-o, its recommended you get the cambelt replaced around 65,000miles.

I'd recommend doing it before then though, around 55,000.

Predator_R32
8th April 2010, 01:10
Only way to find out the damage extent is to take the head off and check

i know whats recommended, that why i was asking to see whether it went because its long overdue or just randomly :-p

It's not just mileage that determines whether a cambelt needs doing, it's time too.

Could do 20k in 5years and it'd still need to be done

x_steph_vts_x

It needed doing ... it was overdue
Cars done 106,000 miles quite alot really ive owned it 10 months ... And I don't think its had 1 4 a while :(

My own fault really I should of had it changed but being the dippy girl I am .. I just get in and turn the key and think everything is fine

Oh well im in this mess now ...
Do you think its worth getting a new engine then and having it done .. or selling as spares or repairs ???

8th April 2010, 08:59
I'd personally look to get a new engine in there.

I wouldn't risk just dropping a new head on, especially if it's tried to start with it gone - would be nervous about the rods. Can drop a good head on but at your risk.

Could drop any 16engine in and use the loom/sensors/Ecu from your current engine. Probably a weekends work to change it over.

my mates cambelt slipped on his vtr he had the cam belt replaced and all 8 valves replaced for about £250 inc labour i think it was, the pistons had dents on them but apparantley they were fine and now its running fine, but he could have just bought a new engine for about £50-100 lol i converted my vtr to a vts in about a week working on it every day for a couple hours if i really spent a good couple days on it i would have got it done its pretty easy, and it'll be easy to find another engine they are all ways up for sale

yea he tried starting it for a long time lol but his belt only slipped a couple teeth didn't completely snap but every valve was bent though and like i said his car is running fine i know because i only live a couple doors away from him lol and he had some mobile mechanic to do it, we only live about 25/30miles east of leicester if you really wanted i could try and get his number, he'll be cheaper than any garage, but you'd probably have to pay for him to come out to you and have a look at the engine, but you could call him and have chat with him

Im with Ross on this

Any 16v engine will be fine, you'll just need to use your existing engine as a donar and swap over sensors and parts like that.

If you dont know of anyone knowledgeable to help you out though anywhere you go will end up pricey

If I was in Loughborough I'd change it over for you - it's not that hard to do, just takes a bit of time.

I'm not back in Loughborough for another 3weeks unfortunately

Someone on here should be able to help I'm sure

8th April 2010, 11:20
Try and check the piston height at tdc to give you an inclination as to whether the rod/s are okay

Shouldn't be too hard to find a head setup on here, someone will come to your rescue!

8th April 2010, 12:08
just change the head the pistons will prob be ok its not that big a job to do the head swap or replace the 16 bent valves head gasket and belt kit

8th April 2010, 13:01
id personally go with the engine swap, as long as you get one that is proven working, such as from a rear ended write off then you have nothing to lose, plus it will definatly work. Just change the cam belt on that one also. Couldnt your dad do it for you? seems that hes mechanically minded?

£275 for the engine with the ali inlet would be a bargain !!!

Just the inlet costs that alone, let alone a nice jp4 head to go with it :P

when i worked at my garage the computers said to get it changed either every 75,000 in normal circumstances or 65,000 in extreme circumstances or every 10 years which ever comes first

The computer is right. I think the saxo's handbook recommends the same as above.

First things first ladies! How do you know its bent valves? get it timed up and a new cambelt, you maybe a lucky girl and it start without bent valves, the worst that can happen is it then smash the valves up, either way your going to need a new head. Im going to get a 16v engine with a snapped cambelt and rebuild it, its not that hard to do if you put your brain into it.

haynes recommends 80k miles, i had mine done at 75k, (i bought it on 73k)

like said above, id change the engine, i know once my VTR dies (hopefully not for another year) im going to be dropping a VTS in

Yeahh that was me lol ....

Errm well ive decided to strip it down this weekend ... See what the damage is, get a new head for it and fitted should be ok agen then :) ...
Its too good to scrap .. I paid 1600 for it 9 months ago and its just got 12 months m.o.t on it !! ...

My advice to people though .. Make sure you have a cambelt change at so many miles .. You think they will never snap but if you do alot of miles like me then you could end up in my mess !!
