Help with cooling system

My friends bought a 1.1 s reg and the cooling system keeps pressurising. The warning light comes on and fan doesn't work - bought a new thermostat today doesn't help matters! Also a lot of brown sludge was in pipes and rad, cleaned those out! Any ideas on what it could be?

sure its not oil in the rad mate?? possible head gasket!

Hello mate, you could well be suffering from what i had a week or so ago, the previous owner of my car used rad sealant and blocked all the pipes up and water channels in the head, so nothing was getting around? I put some heavy dosage of rad flush through the system and so much crap come out it was unreal! after that the temp was awesome, but its stil a bit funny again! (another heavy dosage or take the head apart for me i think.

Cheers guys I'll let him know to take the head off and check that, yea we figured the oil it had emulsified or however you spell it. We spent a good 3 hours cleaning it all out and used the heavy duty flush too! Thermostat had gone which wasn't helping. Lovely, back to the driveway it is :)
