The ECU light should come on when a fault in a sensor or component linked to the ECU developes and warns the driver that the vehicle is not running as efficiently as it should be. However because of the sensitive electronics involved the warnings could be erroneous and may onle require the ECU to have a re-set. The only sure way is to have a diagnostic check carried out on the vehicle. The car will still run and may not appear to be any different as to when the light was off, this is what the manufacturers call 'the limp mode'. All this means is that the car will run but not as efficient and should be checked at the soonest possible time, before the sensor or component completely fails. I have seen in quite a few posts that members can re-set the ECU by either disconnecting the battery or the ECU and leaving it for a period of time before re-connecting. It may well worth giving this a try,
