View Full Version : I've Been In A Audi R8. Over Rated IMO

At work on Thursday, we were cutting some metal and its got to be galvanised, The owner of a galvinising company came in to give us a quote and he turned up in a R8 VAROOM, oh. It only had 16,600 miles on the clock.

He took details and said "Right then, thats it, anything else" i said as a laugh "A spin round the block in the R8?" He replyed "Lets Go" :fcuk: (I wasn't expecting it, once in a life time chance.)

Started the car/ beast up and VAROOM. whole works yard looks at you. As he engaged reverse, on his 'Tv' it shows the reverse camera and it shows a green path where you should be reversing, to avoid other objects. Bloody clever.

Then as he pulled forward, the front end camera came on and showed the safest path in green, on how to avoid knocking my rear end out.

We headed towards the A3, towards Guildford. He floored it out of the industrial estate and FCUK!! The noise and speed it picks up is un real.

Got to the A3 and he 'slammed' his foot on the gas (it was a Automatic) and it dropped down 2 gears and floored it down the slip road. Probably doing 120mph and you wouldn't even realise, such a smooth ride.

Basically cruised at 90mph (with the rest of the traffic) and when there were some gaps in the traffic, he would floor it, unreal noise and quickness even at 90MPH.

We got off 2 junctions before Guildford, went round a roundabout at 40MPH and FCUK :fcuk:, NO LEAN WHAT SO EVER. You wouldn't know you were going round a roundabout if you had a blind fold on.

Floored it up the slip road to head back to Weybridge/ Chertsley and we were doing 100MPH again. Tbh, when he floored it, though it did push you back in your seat but it never made your stomach go funny. My mate had a 2.5T Audi A6 iirc as a curtsey car and when he floored that, it honestly took my breath away and i couldn't lift my head forward off of the head rest, made my head go all funny, like on a roller coaster. And it would wheel spin (ESP was on) when he changed into 2nd, 3rd and 4th LOL, where as the Audi R8 didn't really seem to have the same OMG factor.

It's so basic in side. Still has 'Knobs' to twist for temperature of the heating and still got air vents etc. It had 'Leather' but it felt and looked like cheap leather you get with some cars. IMO, there over rated the R8's and i wasn't overall impressed with the acceleration, just the handling was un real.

I'd rather have a A6, 2.5T, far cheaper, and what i thought, more of a 'wow' factor when you accelerated for what essentially would be 'A Family Car'

I was very grateful to the guy who took me out for 40 minutes. The question had to be popped to him so i could be a bit cheeky lol.

i agree with drew on this completely, it might not be as fast as you hope but the wow factor you get from the speed of it will be made up with the wow factor of how its looks compared to a a6

Acceleration is needed most when there is a loss of speed

A car that handles better will have lost far less speed comming out of the corner :P

+ cars that handle well will always be more fun than something that doesnt handle well but is quick in a straight line

being taken for a spin is no real indication of how and what a car is actually about

u say its sppeed pick up is unreal at the start and then later slate it??

tbh would rather have the knobs then the shite audi ssytem they have noramlly where u gotta go thro loads of menus! as for air vents.....wtf, where else would u expect the air to come from???? u would moan more if u had none and had to open the wndow all the time lol!

tbh its probs not what u expected because it was an auto and he sounded like he ddnt really wana open it up tooo much due to traffic! i would struggle to be inpressed by a car on a A road lol

I think the reason you felt that the a6 impressed you more is that you where expecting alot more from the r8 and they aint all that special, not a fan myself!

Have i missed something?

You sound like you got the WOW factor in the first highlighted bit of text, then at the end you say there isn't much of a wow factor?

It was in an automatic mate, no where near as quick as the manual, and pretty much impossible to wheel spin as you haveno control.

I was in an R8 last year, didn't get to drive it, but it was immense.

The engine noise is incredible and acceleration is phenomenal.

Probably the nicest car i've ever been in tbh

Does it matter?

The V8 is still incredible

The problem is that with a supercar you set yourself such mighty expectations that even a very decent supercar will struggle to live up to them.

The reason it lacked the 'wow' factor was probably the lack of wheelspin, while your mates A6 could do it. The reason? The R8 is far, FAR more advanced in terms of electronic stability and traction aids, plus it was an automatic. So it won't spin off the lights like your saxo lol.

Plus because they're so solid and smooth, the acceleration is seamless and never feels savage. Thats not because its slow, its because it rides well and with minimal fuss- it is a top-end Audi after all, not a stripped-out Skyline track car.

I've been in a V8 briefly and all I can say is that its a phenominal piece of engineering.
