Door courtesy light switch

Just went to replace my door courtesy light switch. Took the switch out expecting there to be a cable with it, no cable connecting the switch! This is why it has never worked! Lol
is there a way of lookin inside the pillar to see if the cable has fallen down or is it fully enclosed?

pull off a pillars and look.
or run a new wire from the switch to the light up the a pillar and across headlining
