View Full Version : Eccentric top mounts for VTR

I lowered the VTR last year on the Spax adjustables but I'm looking for more to play with. Specifically camber and caster which are currently fixed.
I know people make camber adjustable top mounts for higher spec suspension kits but does anyone do anything like an eccentric mount that will be a fairly straight swap for the standard top mounts?
Failing that I may make my own as I have CNC access but buying some tried and tested ones would be preferable.

im pritty sure you will need uprated wishbones aswell but im not sure wether you can get straight foward swap for top mounts as its complicated stuff! lol

Plate with a hole in it? ;)

Just needs a way of allowing for suspension travel so was thinking instead of using a spherical like above, making something like the current one but with nylon inserts to allow the rotation throgh the travel.

A quick google braught up these:

But it's unclear as to wether they would require the hole in the top of the arch to be enlarged to cater for the spherical housing.

You do not need upgraded wishbones at all. The compbarke eccentrics are crap. You can use asts for camber but to get caster you would need to redo you top mounts

Yeah i've seen those AST's before but they've always seemed a bit too pricey for my liking.
Would they effect my ride height at the front at all? Ie: would they make the strut top sit lower and raise my front end? Or do they hold the strut at the same height as the standard rubber mounts?
Also, I'm using the standard spring pans, would this restrict the amount of adjustment the AST's would give me or is there enough clearence between the pan and chassis?

I do not know inregards to the ATS's with height but i am sure i have seen them used with standard style struts.

if u ran too much camber or caster you would definately fuck your wishbones unless you changed them. my college track car had this problem!!!

plus if you cut the turret top further back than standard you gain castor...

you going to get the tyres buffed?
cos at what looks like 3-4 of camber outside of tyre will not do diddly till inside is half worn off.
been there- done that- in racing --difference even with buffed tyres is neglible .
pointlees for road car other than looks ,same goes for castor --for best self centring --which is why you would alter castor is around 4degrees on a saxo ,but as you have power steering --really a waste of time ,especially so unless you have a very wound up plate dif and are having problmes coing out of hairpins when lack of castor will cause it to want to kepp turning in when on big lock .
for most usage the std geometry is hard ot beat on a saxo ,if it isn,t handling right there are other problems
usal one is car is lowered to death at front so steering arms are no longer level with rack ,so when you hit bumps you get bump steer especially when leaned over .

#1 i dont have power steering
#2 i have no intention of running like that all the time... i`m planning on trying various settings and checking tyre temps (inside/middle/outside) and seeing how it goes..
#3 steering arm angles have also been adressed and once the hub plate comes from the laser cutters i`ll be adjusting them further to see what the deal is with bump steer

Well I've been out and had a look at my car and it seems if i'm going to keep with the stock spring seats then i'm not going to be able to get any more neg.camber anyway as there's not enough clearence at the top of the strut, so that's game over. The only way now is to either change the springs and spring seats to ones which are a smaller diameter or to try and find some rose jointed wishbones.
axsaxoman, I wasn't going to go anywhere near 4deg, I was just looking for enough to ensure the tyre stayed flat while cornering and try to improve mid corner hook up and prevent it pushing. A castor increase would be to improve the feel of it.
Either way, without spending £££ on wishhbones (and risk killing drive shafts) it looks like i'm sticking with the stock geometry for now, unless someone can show me a way of running top mount adjustment while using stock spring pans (or some springs and pans that would sort clearence issues).
Slammed106, the track rod idea is great! It's a shame you can't do it with OE ends, but I'm guessing you found Rose Joints that have the correct thread for the OE turnbuckle?

erm.. not exactly...
i made my own rods..
the outboard end uses a common 5/8th unf rod end.. the inboard end i bought a tap so i could retain the M14x1.5 LEFTHAND pug ends...
if you use rose joints the std rods aint long enough...

Thats £100k VLN car built by WSR. Kind of a different ball game. The body, engine and suspension basically hang off the roll cage

a roll cage similar to this???

i quite agree about the clio its a very tailored beast built for a very specific purpose without comprimise.. (and a cunt to get into!)
but if enough work is put into the 106 shell and geometry gains can be had

I do really like you car and think the cage is amazing with allot of very good work on it and by all means i have great respect for it so no direspect but you have a long way to go.
You can get good gains but the Clio is built by one of the most respected race teams in the country and competes at such a high level in some the highest standard race forms.

Stu where the passenger seat?
slammed106
29th April 2010, 20:40
too right theres a long way to go... but regardless of the car and the people building it the principles are the same...
get rid of the factory comprimises and tailor the car for what you want it to do...
swamp- passenger seat is currently in mothers spare bedroom.. it was easier to work on fuel + brake system with it out the way...

5 years is optimistic. but it is off to TDF shortly for the full car and engine loom and a few trick engine control touches.. so thats another big job job`d
still a lot of "bits" left mind....
