EDIT 21st July: Just had her put down today, it wasnt as hard as i thought it was going to be and it went the way i wanted it to. Knelt down hands either side of her head, nose on her nose and looking into each others eyes, i was the last thing she saw. Overly sad, but relived shes gone, she took a turn for the worst earlier this week and she knew her time had come, no stuggles or nothing. Hardest bit, was seeing her at the cremtorium, not the seeing her there but just knowing when to leave, leaving her for the last time, how long do you stay to show how much she meant.

-----------------------

Well a few times now we thought our dog would have to have been put down. After a visit to the vet shes on steroids, and coping well, but beginning to loose control of her back legs...somthing to do with her spinal cord they say..

Anyway the question is:

Would you go with your pet to be put down at the vet, or stay at home away from it?

Im thinking i want to go with her, i want to be the last thing she see before she goes, i want her to see her family with her so she knows shes loved sorta thing and so she knows we care about her.

My mates have ALL said dont go, its the hardest thing, but if i dont i feel like shes thinkin why aint Danny here... i know shes just a dog but still...

Id regret not going, but also its hard to see her go infront of me.

What have you done, or advise?

Back legs gone? German shephard by any chance?

I had to put my old dog down a year ago, was the worst moment ever. I would say go with it, last thing a dog wants is to go into a vets without its owner, you don't want it to feel scared and un-loved before it goes. I admit I got emotional n balled my eyes out for ages like a pussy, but it was my dog that I grew up with so I was expecting to cry.

If you don't go with the dog then your basically abandoning your dog which is going to be put down, I would definitely go with the dog.

Take dog to the Vets, say goodbye, go home, done!

When i took my shepherd to the vets, we went in, but then she started panicking a bit so we had to go out then we went in when she had been put down, wasn't pleasant!

Shes a bit of everything... Terrier, Lurcher, collie... lol. Its the nerves in ther spinal chord tht are giving way, theres 3 levels to it and at the moment only one level has gone sorta thing, just unstable on her back legs really. Think the German Shepards are hip problems aint they?

Its the unloved feeling that i dont want her to get, which is the whole reason i want to go. But my mates have said dont go...I know that il cry my eyes out, ive grown up with her since i was 8.

Yee think i have to go tbh, itll be hard on me, but the last thing i want my dog to ever think was that she was unloved.

Back legs is whats classed as hips etc.

With mine it was heart breaking cos she was 100% there mentally, but her back end was just fucked, she would even fall ito her mess when crapping as couldn't crouch properly, was so crap :(

Got 2 more dogs now, one of which i got within a week as the house wasn't the same without a dog

Yeah German Sheps back legs/hips sort of seize up, got to a point where she couldn't get herself up after lying down, we had to pick her bed up with her in it to get her into the back of the car. It did feel weird knowing that on the way home she won't be with us. You have to go though, if you have grew up with it then basically show the dog that it is loved in its final seconds.

Its gonna be hard.

Aww im really sorry to hear that i dread the day my dog gets too old :(, anyway you gota think if you want to be the last person she sees or what, i feel for you alot though!

Its one reason why i dont want a dog or pet again after shes gone. I mean a goldfish i dont mind, they dont have a personality and i can just buy replacments when they die.

Take dog to the Vets, say goodbye, go home, done!

When i took my shepherd to the vets, we went in, but then she started panicking a bit so we had to go out then we went in when she had been put down, wasn't pleasant!

lol, you say its like shes a car being crushed lol.

Id hate to have to leave her at the last minute, either go with or not at all, i could just deliver her to the vet n let them sort her out.

:)

Yeh i would have her put down immediatly if she was in pain. At the moment she isnt, at least she dosent tell us anyway, i dont even think she can feel anything back there.

Back legs is whats classed as hips etc.

Similar to how mines going but its the nerves and signals from her brain telling the rear end what to do, ours is still mentally there i think, shes had a stroke a year ago which kinda brought this on and shes a lil bit death aswell now. Can walk into the house tickle her feet and she dont do anything, have to wiggle her paw for her to notice anything lol

I think thats the way ours is going to go, she somtimes finds it hard to get up and we dont think she can feel her arse as much sorta thing, couse she dosent like crouch as much as before and she jus walks and lets it fall out as if she dont know its happenin lol :(

Same as my old dog, use to shit and piss itself without realising, use to go sleep at night and wake up to a few puddles on the kitchen floor or shit, it was horrible and went on too long, If im honest, I wish I put it down sooner, so then I knew for definite it went out while it was happy instead of when it was a cripple. Was a very upsetting sight to see..

Also, do what Bickerton said, to make yourself feel better get another puppy within a few days, I did this, the house did not feel right at all without a dog. Will cheer you up alot after :y:

I guess, i mean i couldnt get another dog, like i dont want to just cover up the sadness with replcaing her, its like theres no respect sorta thing.

My parents have retired now anyway so they want to enjoy their retirement for a while without being tied down with a pet.

Last memory of you dog is it being put to sleep/dead?

This is what i mean, i really dont want that as my last memory of her. But also I dont wanna be like selfish sorta thing thinking about my feelings rather than hers in the last moments.

It isn't pleasant watching them try and inject alot of fluid into the dogs either, isn't some 20ml needle

Ahh its horrible, but its the only way we're having her put down.

My mates dog went paralyzed a few weeks ago and it hated the vets so they shot it in the head. Probably felt less pain and didnt even know it died that way but it gives me shivers.

Feel for you mate, do what your heart says not what your pals say, what if she gets put down and you end up wishing you hadn't have listened to pals but then its too late.

Had to have one of our dog's put down last year. He tripped over and broke his leg. He was 14 and they said he was too old to operate on.

Was with him when he 'went' and it was the shittest feeling i've ever had.

Grown up with him the majority of my life and to know you won't see them again is just plain horrible :(

Yeh she did, got to decide where to spread her ashes now :S

i thought i rememberd this thread. are you glad in a wierd way that it's over?.

Yeee, shes been on steroids for a while now, had a boost which lasted a day but she just collapsing now. Was so sad to see her like that, so we decided it was enough, she had too and was very glum.

Yeh, im relieved and happy, its wierd. Im happy she hasnt got the frustration of having a more limited life now she can finally rest.

Before i guess i thought about it more selfishly, not wanting to let her go and let her be awake through the whole lot, but it really isnt right, and feels better now.

I get proper wierd with this stuff, just thinking i breathed in the last air she breathed couse our noses were touching :(. Buried my face into her when i saw her at the crematorium. Loved her :). The air that blows around me outside, nice thought to think its probably her and shes always around. Im a freak when it comes to death :(

You did the right thing being with her.

I wasnt there when my dog died when i was like 9/ 10.

when it comes to having animals put down i have on countless occasions offered to be the person there for my friends horses when they are to go. bear in mind, not all horses are put down via LI (lethal injection)... someone has to still be there to 'hold them' while it happens.

I found out my old horse died a few months ago, noone told me, and i was distraught that i wasnt able to be there. i would have given anything to have had him head on my knee as he went.... as he was put to sleep by LI. death to me is that, death. its not the end of the end, its only the end of the beginning. has never affected me. i dont cry, dont ponder over it.

Well done you for being strong enough to be there.

not as hard as you think. gun can be a bit of a hard one to watch at first, stud guns bit easier as its not really a 'bullet' but a retractable stud.

still... iv held a lot of horses for both of these methods. they go down the same way. but they are out of any pain the were feeling a second before. horse worlds a hard world for most of us. not all of us were brought up with our ponies being sent ' to another field' when they got too old. some were, unfortunatley, told the truth.

you just gotta get on with it. as i said, death isnt the end, its only the end of the beginning.....

i cant work out if your trying to imply ive been bought up a spoilt brat or not lol,
none of my horses have died on me so i havent had my parents 'take them to another field' lol
equestrian centre i worked at used to have them put down in a stable round the corner then tie there legs together and lift them into the big truck to take them away for meant  after all the years of service

The last commercial yard i worked for, wont name it but its one of the Biggies in Scotland, begins with a G, used to have them done in the field, and same as you, winched up on to the knackermans wagon.

sorry, but how else do people want these 3/4 of a tonne beasts moved? lifted?

if people have the money and resources to have their horses buried at home then so be it, most dont. its expensive as it is to have them disposed even in the normal way.

shooting them, imo, is quicker and less painful (also less expensive) than LI.

with LI, if they are on their feet, you have to go through the process of drugging them enough to get them down. they can become dellusional, anxious, irritated during this. vet has to try and guess just how much anesthetic it will take to do this. and only when they are down can the lethal dose be administered.

'shooting' horse is standing, (unless its already down due to injury) one little click, it feels nothing.

and you can also give it to the knackerman to go back into the hunting circle. (i put that the nice way)

im gunna have to disagree with your views and say i dont like people who have that opinion
for example a horse is an animal, to you it seems more of a money making thing/object
to me my horses are my pets and they get spoilt and coddled, rugged up and booted etc
and to us it doesnt matter how much its gunna cost to get them cremated, but they will be, and not sent for meat. horse is even worse than a dog as ive had most of mine since they were young and my mum wont sell them, and we'll have them till they die, so thats a good 30 years we may have my lot. thatd almost be like sending your child for meat in my eyes,
its hard to explain
but ive never agreed with people who hold your views
i also dont agree with hunting

My horse is an animal, he holds higher respect from me than any human on this planet.

but he, at the end of the day, is that. an animal. he is NOT wrapped up in cotton wool. he lives out 70 % of time with no rug, he only wears minimal boots for jumping / hacking. hes ridden in a snaffle bridle, breasplate and saddle. no fancy gadgets or 'happy mouths' to be honest, he is the most under tacked 17.2hh eventer i have EVER seen. and it suits us!

if he is moderatley lame, or minor injured, he is worked thorugh it. he is an event horse, he needs to be hardy.

Yes, my horses do make me money. as do the other 5 i ride, but i have spent months creating a genuine bond with that horse, building mutual respect, a 'working relationship'

yes there are days where i go up and i will brush him for hours and he will get treats, but 90% of the time, he is brushed so he is rideable and is rewarded through voice. he is a horse at the end of the day, he couldnt care less if hes clean. and if our bond is good enough, my praise should be more beneficial as a reward than a treat.

horses are not 'pets' they should not be bred to be pets. they are workign animals. imo, a horse should never be born without a forseen purpose for it, whether it be to race, to jump, to cart... that is how we get horse negligence, horses with no purpose being sold to people with no experience.

id never send a horse of mine for meat. but then again i do not think ill of others who do. its a personal choice

as for your views on hunting, its an age old sport that for many decades helped witht he control of foxes.

you may think 'oh poor little fox how it must suffer'

well it doesnt. when the fox realises the hounds are apon it, its is already bussing with adrenilin, it will then go into a state of shock. it will be dellusional.

the hounds are trained for the way they kill. first hound goes for the throat and breaks the neck.

the fox never feels a thing.

WTF at the way u think

treatin animals like objects, go play your polo instead of chasing animals and killing them. If you got any pet dogs, and they need putting down, just get aload of hounds to chase it, becouse it will get adrenaline n feel good then it will go into a state of shock which is fine then die n get ripped apart :y: perfectly fine.

no wonder youre not on any horse forums
mine live out when we have enough grass
but seeing as you own a TB, he should be rugged up when its cold as hes a warmblood and hes gunna feel the cold and loose that weight straight away,
i refuse to believe your horse makes you money either, he looks liks hes struggling to get over a 2'6 course in your old pic

a dog wouldnt kill a dog.

but a dog would kill a fox you tard.

keep your nose out of something you dont know anything about why dont you.

and i dont treat my animals like objects, as i have already said, i respect them more than anything else, and i do love them, but you need to be careful not to over step the line into mollycoddling them and treating too well.

a horse is a horse, it eats grass, shits, rolls. it deals with the rain in the wild as well as hurting itself occasionally.

just because it is kept by a human does not mean it automatically mu8st be shielded from the elements and fussed over when it cuts its legs.

you think my horses would do what they do for me if they were treated badly?

and on the opposite, you think they would do all that if they were mollycoddles pets?

nope. they do it because we work hard as a team. we know eachother inside out, but we are what we are, horse and rider. im the pilot, hes the power.

a dog wouldnt kill a dog.

but a dog would kill a fox you tard.

keep your nose out of something you dont know anything about why dont you.

and i dont treat my animals like objects, as i have already said, i respect them more than anything else, and i do love them, but you need to be careful not to over step the line into mollycoddling them and treating too well.

why would you ride a horse if its showing signs of being lame?! that causes more damage than good
no wonder youre not on any horse forums
mine live out when we have enough grass
but seeing as you own a TB, he should be rugged up when its cold as hes a warmblood and hes gunna feel the cold and loose that weight straight away,
i refuse to believe your horse makes you money either, he looks liks hes struggling to get over a 2'6 course in your old pic
my horses have all showjumped but theyre still my pets :S
maybe they do things wierd in scotland
you sound like you ride for rough dealers rather than proper owners

becuase alot of the time lameness is due to the horse ebing stiff or having filled legs... and how do you get rid of them? or do you not know ANYTHING?

course he is rugged up when its cold, but hes not a little scraggy racehorse, hes a strapping big eventer. hes a hardy fucker. i dont run for a rug when it starts spitting.

2 foot 6 sweetheart? get a grip. and it he was struggling how come his feet were another 2 foot higher than the jump? that particular day he was jumping like a whippet and jumping much bigger than he should ahve been....

ride for rough dealers? oh behave yourself. i dont ride 'for' anyone. i do however ride 'with' some extremley good riders.

i prefer to spend my time with my horse and teaching rather than sitting on internet forums talking about it thank you very much.

im away to the horse now... to ride... in the rain... oh how horrid am i!!!

one of my horses has had filling legs its whole life, and a locking stifle, so i know he needs walking off, but they are very different things to being lame!
as for living out, his legs wouldnt fill if he did ;) unless hes old and crippled ofc
he looks to be clearing this by miles btw

im clearly blind :D
stop banging on about horses on here its frankly annoying, and i wouldnt be paying you to ride my horse like that!
btw, proper eventers are seen as athletes, so yes they are mollycoddled

not as hard as you think. gun can be a bit of a hard one to watch at first, stud guns bit easier as its not really a 'bullet' but a retractable stud.

still... iv held a lot of horses for both of these methods. they go down the same way. but they are out of any pain the were feeling a second before. horse worlds a hard world for most of us. not all of us were brought up with our ponies being sent ' to another field' when they got too old. some were, unfortunatley, told the truth.

you just gotta get on with it. as i said, death isnt the end, its only the end of the beginning.....

Yes, my horses do make me money. as do the other 5 i ride, but i have spent months creating a genuine bond with that horse, building mutual respect, a 'working relationship'

yes there are days where i go up and i will brush him for hours and he will get treats, but 90% of the time, he is brushed so he is rideable and is rewarded through voice. he is a horse at the end of the day, he couldnt care less if hes clean. and if our bond is good enough, my praise should be more beneficial as a reward than a treat.

horses are not 'pets' they should not be bred to be pets. they are workign animals. imo, a horse should never be born without a forseen purpose for it, whether it be to race, to jump, to cart... that is how we get horse negligence, horses with no purpose being sold to people with no experience.

id never send a horse of mine for meat. but then again i do not think ill of others who do. its a personal choice

as for your views on hunting, its an age old sport that for many decades helped witht he control of foxes.

you may think 'oh poor little fox how it must suffer'

well it doesnt. when the fox realises the hounds are apon it, its is already bussing with adrenilin, it will then go into a state of shock. it will be dellusional.

the hounds are trained for the way they kill. first hound goes for the throat and breaks the neck.

the fox never feels a thing.

a dog wouldnt kill a dog.

but a dog would kill a fox you tard.

I think Sax-P needs a new 'Horsey' section...

It could have subcatagories like;

Tuning - Energy drinks/foods.
Health and fitness - Horse steds.
Styling - Funny hats and horseshoes.
Problems and Queries - Please help, my horse won't start.

Namedropping section: To drop names of top horse riders/horse clubs you ride with

Patronising section: To patronise anyone else who discusses horses with a huge essay on how you are the best rider, everyone else is wrong but you, and how you treat your horses exactly the way they should be treated, and everyone else does it wrong

Perhaps jw could be the moderator? Just a suggestion

It's absolutely guttering to see your dog go dude. I was in tears too when we had to have one of our dog's put down last year.

But i am glad i was with him. Offering some sort of comfort i hope. He was so calm about everything despite looking like he knew what was coming...

How on earth did horses survive for millions of years without us wrapping them in blankets and putting nails through their feet?

But seriously stop talking about horses it's boring as fuck.
