i tend to do it all myself
i couldnt afford to run a car if i had to rely on garges so add me to the list of diy mechanics
I do, and if it's something I'm not sure about i get my old man to help.

Looks like a good few of us fix are own lol. my bro is a mechanic and the only thing he has done is the clutch because i didnt have time and he had free time while i was at work. Im not really mechanically minded but sat and thought about whats needed doing and just gone out to the garage and done it ie headgasket, rear axle, disks, struts. weird how i have learnt myself to do it.
i done the clutch on my old rs2000 4x4 on the floor out side my house,
it was a pig of a job but i got there

I used to only do servicing etc and major things it used to go in the garage for work.
Now I am trying to learn how to do more, first thing its ripping the engine and bits out of my broken saxo and into the new one I am getting :D
So far its been fun.
Will be undertaking most things after this.

good reason for doing your own work is that u no its done rite
None of our cars has seen a garage since before I can remember. Dad does all the work on all of them.
Although all 3 cars including mine are very well looked after so nothing has ever needed urgently repairing.
I try but would probably make it worse if i did :( lol

i always give it a wee try :) no harm in it, only way to learn and so far ive never made anything worse ! but major stuff i leave well alone and get my team of mechanics round and supervise :)
i always try my self first,
but the method i often find is..
If duct tape.. elastic bands.. and WD40 dont fix it.. Then you have a problem
Only job ive had to do to my car since i bought it, is bleed the brakes, simple really :y:

the only time ive taken my car to a garage is when a sensor became unsoldered, and i didnt reliease, it only came up via diaognostics.
or if i havent got a certain tool, normally a press for bearings a stuff im take it up...
and of course mot and tyres i take it to the garage...
I do something like service but other problems garage.

as above the only time id take my car to a garage is for diagnostic's as i cant afford the equipment. but any other work and i would do it myself, what with me studying mechical engineering it would make sense to do my own work

I try and do everything myself because I find it hard to find a garage I trust. least if i've done it I no its been done properly :)

Hardly anything! I'm not mechanically minded at all, i would rather pay a garage to do it because i woldn't want to make it worse and at a garage i know it's getting done right.
How many of you work/fix your own cars? no matter what the problem.
oui. :p

Only reason i got a saxo was cos i can't work on anything newer without having a degree in programing! plus they go quick and look cool! ;)

I do mine also for the cheapness lol no labour and working for a car dealer place i get stuff cheap, set me back £35 all the stuff to do my head gasket on my vtr, most garages want to charge around the £300 mark! saved myself a few hundred! i hate being without the car so i got it in the garaged and worked till 5 in the morning to get it done.

The only things I do myself is take it to that place with them pumps that put some liquid stuff into your car when the red light coms on on the dashboard! It always seems to cost a lot of money though! Other than that, like a couple on here, I'm not mechanically minded! If you told me my head gasket had gone, I'd probably be offended. I can change a wheel but I would be clueless if I had to change my breaks.

Me and my dad do it all ourselves...the only thing I get a garage to do is MOT and a cambelt change. The amount of money you save is mahoosive
citroen_saxo_vtr
4th May 2010, 17:31
I even tackle the cam belt, i borrow the locking tools and stuff from my bro that i dont have. MOT is the only thing my car go to a garage for, june that be.

Not much I won't do on my car as I've got my own ramps and usually spare room in the garage for it, so far done D2B and a D2k swap in civics and will be soon doing a B2B upgrade in my own civic but am contemplating sending it off for the B2B.
