Hello boyos

first of all this is going to be a bit of a read but to summarise I have £1000 - 1800 MAX to buy a new vehicle.

I already have a VTR as a daily driver but would maybe like something a bit more 'cherished' ie something rare or something old... The type of car most people will appreciate.

Now it would be an on-going project of mine as I would not need it for work.. Possibly a weekend car. However I have no garage, although I do have parking space... This means I cannot rip the whole thing to pieces any work I do will be fairly light and more importantly it can't be rusted to pieces!

I realise there is a very big list of cars that fall into that catagory so I will put down some ideas I have been looking at and thinking of... What would you pick in my shoes?

On another note.. I don't want it to loose too much value. Which is a bonus for limited edition stuff

old golfs (mk1 gti/mk2, maybe mk3)
Saxo VTS (cheap but I already have a VTR)
Clio Williams - (Seem pretty expensive)
106 rallye (mk1.. mk2's seem too expensive)
205 gti's 1.9 or Rallye model?
Classic Mini (most stupidly expensive)
AX GT - (cheap and cheerful although very ugly)
BMW e36 3 series- (very high milage for this price)

im edging to a mk1 golf gti but finding a decent one is hard.

What would you get or can you think of anymore I should think about?

E36, cope with miles very well.

Plus some rwd action.

Can pic up a tidy 406 v6 coupe for that amount

i'd add s2 ERST and R5 GTT to that list

and i wouldn't bother with the BMW (unless you can get an E30 for that price?), the 205 rallye (unless its an import, V rare!) or the mk3 golf (unless you find the mintest vr6, must be 3dr and manual tho)

not exactly rare, or going to hold any sort of value tho is it? unless its an m3 and thats not going to happen for £1800

Clio Williams or the BMW would be my choice.

Just prefer the style of them.

hmmm they to tend to hold their value well. you could own one a year put miles on t and still get what you paid.

i didnt say it was rare. IMO you cant beat a bit of rwd.

Or save a little more and get a 172 thats more of the same IMO.

no you didn't, but the op asked for opinions on a car that was rare, old (i presume on its way too classic status) and holds its value. I just don't see an e36 bmw as any of these things, an e30 though yes definately!

and i'm not debating that rwd can be shit loads of fun :y:

I have actually found quite a few 205 rallye's around on my hunts... very cheap aswel, the williams will cost loads.

I think I am edging towards the bmw or golf at the moment

yes but are they uk spec 205 rallyes which are basically stickered up 1.4 205's. whereas the european's got 205 rallyes on twin carbs which were the real deal

i have seen a few vr6 about for £900-1,000 (i was looking to buy on at one stage) just didnt know enough about them. The 2 i looked at were very ropey so put me off.

Go for an S2 Rallye.. Most the S1's are falling apart if you don't wanna pay too much money for it, and you might find a good S2 with a fucked engine ideal for 16v conversion as a project

Plus the S2 looks so much nicer

Right then boys, Have got a viewing arranged for a 106gti that seems to be going for a steal of a price although its very high milage and without much history! owner took it in px so doesn't seem to know much about it.. I am going to grill him when I see it.

Also wondering your thoughts on this, and for 1950. Looks quite tidy although the back kit looks a bit of a mess
